Would it be worth it?

Featured Replies

Just looking for opinions.

Currently got a MK3 VRS 220, been remapped, about to MOT it, refurb the wheels, and fit two new Eagle F1s to the front, but it's a hatchback. 63 plate (will be sold with private plate) and 72k miles.

Due to buying a new dog I've sort of decided I'd rather have an estate purely because of the extra height you get in the boot would help put a decent sized crate in there. Looking at Cupras.

Would it be worth me going through all the bother of selling, then tracking down and buying, one of those, or is there actually not as much difference as I'm expecting? I've got it in my head the difference between them in the boot would be decent, and I'd be getting similar power in terms of reported figures.

To swap I'd be needing around £9k for my Skoda, and I've no idea if that price is viable to sell these cars these days.

Not worth it IMO. You can get a good sized crate in the back of an Octavia, had one in mine, room enough for 2 spaniels. What size dog do you have but if you want to change go a head.

Just come  from  cupra 290st and the boot isnt a patch on the octavia, i briefly had a vrs hatch and that had that a bigger boot than the Cupra and better built i may add, im now in a pre f/l 230 vrs estate and although boot length is same as hatch the height makes it a perfect option for a dog, the Cupra St has a slight sloping roof and there isnt any benefit over a vrs hatch

Hes possibly around spaniel size, maybe a but smaller, I just find the back window slopes too soon to get his current create in. I'm in the dangerous stage of already planning on how to juggle my money to get a new car aswell.

Do you think a 230/245 estate would be a better option?

I'm now addicted to the remapped power on my drive to work so cant go lower 😂

Octavia Estate and you could probably fit about 12 crates 😜

Shame you are considering changing your car (which you clearly like a lot) for a small dog. Having heard what the Cupra ST owner said about the height and size of their boot I would keep the hatch and try and work with it and no real financial cost to you even if you have to buy a different sized dog crate that fits better in the hatch. Let's face it 590 litres should be plenty of space unless you have a St. Bernard.

I've been considering a DSG car for a while aswell, and my car has no LSD so struggles with the power in some situations.

Combining those two with my thought the boot of a Cupra would be taller sort of all added in my head to a good change. Had no idea the Octavia boot would be bigger so I'm now not sure 😂

How much does it cost to get a dog put down these days?  Got to be cheaper surely?

Hope dogs can't read or else they have all stopped wagging their tails. That was brave hope you can cope with the impending backlash?:bandit:

you can get crates made to size. Again that would be cheaper than the price to trade.

Cupra 300 4drive estate would be a good swap imo. Probably a similar amount of power to a remapped 220, similar boot capacity, but most importantly the ability to put the power down effortlessly in virtually any conditions.

Been tempted myself on the above Cupra model to replace my 63 plate 220 hatch.

Would the dog notice whether you had wheelspin or fantastic traction. Guess it would appreciate a more sedate driving style like mine.🐌

That driving style must be since the traffic light Grand Prix and other posts of a similar (now removed) ilk then?

John 43.7mpg and 46.1mpg today on the commute. Is that not sedate enough for you? Got to the garage with 1.52 litres left in the tank after 441 miles of boring commuting. No Grand Prix starts just a few Jaguar, BMW , Audi and Merc drivers shown the true path.:notme:

A friend has a Leon FR estate and when we went to shift s wheelbarrow from my boot to his, we didn't seem to have enough space in his.

I swear the boot is smaller, or maybe it's just that on the hatch you can drop it in and close the lid, while the estate Leon you slide it in more.   I don't know, I just looked at the two and was glad I got what I got.

Ultimately, I don't see it as a big advantage, if any at all.  The only plus I can see is you can pull and retract the cover on an estate but you'll have to remove the whole parcel shelf on the hatch.

Saying that, I Just looked up those cupras, they do look nice.  But, not £20k extra nice.

I'd be going used obviously, and don't mind about the mileage that much. Can find second hand Cupra 290s for around £14k, which isn't a huge outlay if I sell my current car.

I've noticed Golf R estates are about £1k dearer though, which is tempting.

The Golf might be missing some of the standard equipment from the Leon though.

The Golf interior counters with better quality surfaces and a premium feel compared to the basic feeling cheap Leon plastics. Even my Skoda interior is way better than a Leon's.;)

Yeah I think the likes of Cruise control were extras on them, so would have to find the right spec'd one now. I'll be honest, I'm down the rabbit hole and now more interested in how much extra power I can get out it than what matters for the dog 😂

Yup. Spent most of today looking through forums/reviews and this is the overwhelming opinion. Leon apparently drives and sounds better, but the inside is so dull and cheap it puts people off. I'm thinking for an extra £1k, I'd be better getting a 4WD with nicer interior, as I couldn't afford a Cupra 300.

Have a look at TransK9 dog crates, expensive but excellent crates.

Depends a bit on age, but all Golf Rs were well specced, lots of lease ones available now as they were soooo cheap.  The R is a fantastic car, well built, easy to drive and super fast in all conditions.  I would not go for 19" wheels unless you hace DCC though as the ride can be hard, DCC makes the car fantastic.  Mine came standard with ACC by the way.

Depends on your definition of well specced. As you pointed out, plenty were leased because they were relatively cheap, but adding options to leases becomes expensive quickly, so people tend not to bother.

There are lots of earlier examples which don't have Nav or heated front seats - fairly basic options. If you wanted the upgraded Dynaudio sound system, a quick autotrader results comparison suggests about 10% or less have this option; 550 results drop to 54.
