Hi All,

 

My wife's Octavia (MK3 13 plate) is due another service, currently has Main Dealer FSH and is now on 53k and due it's major service again which i believe is every other year?

 

Does everyone continue to follow this or am i just being ripped off? Will another Interval service be fine for another 10k miles? 

 

Or is now the time to perhaps find an independent garage to service it because the car is 6 years old?

If you're on fixed term servicing then your services flip-flop between minor and major, if you're on variable servicing, each service is considered major.

I keep my cars on dealership services until the car reaches 5yrs old - at this point you're outside of any dealership warranty and also at the end of any goodwill you may require.

 

However, certainly with my last car, the cost difference between main dealer and independent really wasn't that great.

So the only difference between fixed term and variable is the minor service in the middle of major services every 2 years?

 

Meaning, instead of 1 oil change every year. The long-life variable service oil lasts 2 years.

Do not pay £289 if that is what is being asked because it is called a 'Major Service' & a participating dealer that does Fixed Price Services.

 

If it is the same as a Fixed Service /  interim service @ £179 but a Pollen Filter fitted, 

or the Same as a £119 Oil Service.

 

If they want £289 ad yet are not changing Spark Plugs / Fuel Filter, or Air Filter because someone decides not due it is a pith take.

No wheels actually taken off, nothing done or checked of the gearbox or diffs. 

Brake Fluid change another extra $60.

 

Get the car actually serviced at an Independent where Servicing is carried out and not just charged for even if no more than a Oil Service is done.

I've been booked in for the £289 which we also had done 20k miles ago.

 

If i just go with interim will it still be FSH as such? Guessing it would make no difference whatsoever when i come to sell?

FSH is just a term for having the details of all servicing carried out.  Doesn't necessarily mean the vehicle has been serviced to manufacturers spec.  Provided you keep the record together to prove the work it will be good enough.  Full dealer history is another matter and, as stated above, carries less weight as the car gets on in years.  Some of it will depend on how long you intend to keep the car.  Beyond 10 years and providing you can show it had oil changed and cambelt, etc. done then you'll be ok.  Anything else may be the bit that helps someone decide to buy yours though.  I personally prefer to know it has had a regular change and all other part checked/replaced during my ownership then pass the car on as it becomes too costly to repair.

I sold my Mk2.5 vRS at 7.5yrs old - it was actually WBAC who took it from me in the end and they increased their offer because it had "FSH" - first 5yrs under main dealership and the final 2.5 under a local Audi specialists.

They at no point were looking for a full dealership history.

When I spoke with the dealership where I bought my current car about trading-in, they were more interested in what had been completed by Skoda and didn't really put much weight into what was done outside of their dealership network.

 

As above, it all does depend on how long you're keeping the car. Selling at 7yrs, full dealership history might get you a little more at trade-in, but nothing silly. Planning on keeping 9+ years, so with the cheapest option but ensuring the correct parts are fitted each time.

 

To add to my musings above and others words:

The length of time you keep the car for is key.  You may spend £1000* in premium by taking it to a dealer for the first 10 years.  You would be unlikely to get that back in increased value due to dealer history at sale time.

 

* complete guess.  Probably less but the theory is sound.  Plus the knowledge that if serviced at an indy you are more likely to get work done that you can trust.  Buyer maybe less so for no real reason.

Full Main Dealer Service History can mean you have a history of what Preventative Servicing & Maintenance has not been done.

 

For the paint and corrosion warranty the body inspection should be done at each service and a report done, yet Skoda UK knock back valid claims because they say not carried out, yet a car might have FMDSH and clearly they know where & who it is not doing it.

No!  It's UP TO a maximum of 2yrs.  Variable servicing means that time can vary.  The time the oil lasts depends on a number of factors - how the car has been driven and in what environment it's been driven.

We plan to keep the car for another 3 years which will take it to around 90k. Then we would probably Trade in at another Main Dealer, possibly be another Skoda purchase

 

Based on the info above, would you...

 

1. Pay for the £289 major service

2. Pay for the £179 Interim

3. Use an independent from now and save a little? 

 

If anyone can recommend a good Skoda garage in near to Medway, Kent, i'd be grateful.

I would go 3. I’m sure someone will come up with a decent recommendation.

 

The way I look at it, I bought mine at 3 years old and it’s still going to depreciate by well over  £200/month over the next 3 years, (and that’s if it had a continuous full Skoda dealer service history), so there’s no point paying over the odds for said Skoda history.

I can do the basic services myself and probably 60% of jobs will be done by me.

I use a mobile Aircon guy for Aircon services and repair and an independent VW specialist (sorry not anywhere near Medway) for anything I can’t do whether that’s due to lack of tools, or inclination.

So you'd be looking to trade-in a 10yr old car, 90k+ miles on the clock?

With that in mind, paying for the Skoda service isn't going to earn you anything on the value of the car at that time.

I'd go independent, see how much they want to charge you.

As above, just take it to a decent garage.

Servicing isn't rocket science, I've done all* my own on my Honda for 12 years of ownership. 

At that age you'll never get your money back for dealer servicing and personally I'd not assume they know any better anyway.  

My car is only 2.5 years old but I have no intentions of taking it to a dealer for any work tbh.

 

*Except cambelt changes as access is a pain and I really couldn't be bothered
