Strange humming noise from front

Featured Replies

have you checked the brake rotors and pads for any uneven wear?

if it is a bearing that wasnt changed then heres a test -

it will resonate at harmonics of certain speeds. so, if its loud at 15mph, it should be loud again at 30, and 60

20 would be 40 and 80.

I haven't, however, all the discs and pads have been fitted new in late November.

The pitch and loudness is just about the same from 15mph and more.

The noise is very much similar to the one you get when driving over the white lanes on roads.

I'll post an audio recording of it later on.

audio would be ver y good, at least we will know the type of sound properly then

Good evening,

So I managed to get couple of recordings done. Here is the link for the audio files. There are two versions I've tried to do - one with 80hz cutoff and one with 120hz cutoff. The 80hz the noise is more natural and prominent, in the one with 120hz I was taking over a truck between 0:32 - 0:42. So there might be some more noises added in, however, the rolling nature of the noise is still the same. Hope you get the idea of the noise itself.

Cheers,
Pav

Even listening with headphones I can't discern anything other than normal tyre noise, you probably shouldn't have cut the frequencies so as to preserve a more accurate recording.

There is a simple way to check wheel bearings. Jack up the car, place one hand mid way on the coil spring, and turn the wheel with the other. You will feel a vibration in the spring if the wheel bearing isn't perfect, and nothing if its ok. Compare both sides.

Check both front and rear, its easy to convince yourself the noise is from the front when things at the rear are at fault.
