vRS shudder on ignition off

Featured Replies

For the past week my car has been really rough at ignition off, ive done some reading and it seemed likely the anti shudder valve wasnt working

But, it is working, ive cleaned it up in case it was sticking, no different, at ignition off the arm moves to move the flap, then a few seconds later goes back

What else could it be ?

ASZ engine

Ive not actually looked to see whether its fully closing, maybe its gunked up and only moving half way ?

Or maybe not enough vacuum to move it fully ?

Check for vacuum leaks.

Confused about how you say :

If you cleaned it, it won't be gunked up, will it? Unless you cleaned up the outside or the actuator mechanism outside, but not the inside?

ive not had it off, only cleaned it inside with some carb cleaner and a cloth

you thinking maybe not enough vacuum to move it properly ?

Yes, check the pipework for leaks and check the actuator is working properly.

the actuator is moving, and then after a few seconds moving back again, but im not 100% sure its moving fully, maybe its only moving half way

Note how far the actuator rod moves under vacuum shutdown, then try just pushing it by hand and see if it will go further.

cheers, will check this tonight, looking at the video ive done it doesnt seem to move a lot so maybe it is a bit stuck still

Only you can do this, we can make suggestions but you'll have to fix it yourself, you may have sprayed a load of jizz at it but you should remove it and test it properly, it may be that the suction from the engine is supposed to pull it shut once the actuator has initiated the movement but that suction is being lost through a failed EGR valve.

Just move it by hand, make sure it goes 90 degrees, or even better, get a vac pump and test the actuator for integrity as well

moved it by hand, moves to fully shut no problems and no sticking points

used a syringe on the pipe to the actuator and it moves all the way and holds the vacuum no problems at all

so, seems like its getting some vacuum, but not enough, now if the hose to the actuator is ok, as thats holding a vacuum fine, im wondering if its the vacuum box, or maybe even that reservoir at the front of the engine

the wife also has a fabia so going to try her vacuum box to see if that makes a difference

thanks for all the input

Isn't it quite common to get leaks in the large diameter pipe's connections at/near the random pump?

Edit: autocorrected from Tandem!

I would get somebody to turn the car on and off half a dozen times while you watch the valve, if its moving fine its not your issue unless the flap has fallen off.

its moving, just not enough to close

Mine was shuddering when I turned the key off and didn't seem to turn off straight away. Problem went away as soon as I fitted a lower powerflex engine mount......might be worth a shot?

looks like you are hunting for vac leaks then

Trying the other solenoid box thing like you said would at least rule that out.

ok so went to try the solenoid box, my wiring connector wont fit onto it so it must be different in some way

gonna get one off eBay to try out

quick question, the vacuum chamber, that ball at the front of the engine, with a big syringe connected to the pipe for that, i can just pull my syringe right out with no resistance at all, is that how it is ?

tried it on the wifes fabia and thats the same

My VRs used to do that.

My issue was a fault code (2022 i think) that was throttle actuator position, but I also had an engine warning light on too.

Part of the issue was breaks in the wiring loom in the engine bay but I also had to have the actuator (?) that sits next to the EGR valve replaced.

The specialist said that basically when the engine shut down the ECU didn't know what position my throttle was in, so it shut down with an odd shudder.

Hopefully it is something far simpler but maybe it is worth checking.

How big is the syringe? If the vacuum ball has a lot more capacity than what the syringe has then you won't feel any noticeable resistance.

It's a 60ml syringe iirc, quite big

right guys, further testing done, still no faults showing on dash but not checked with a reader yet

tried a new vacuum unit, i say new, a used one from eBay, no different

ive also ran fresh vacuum hose to the round chamber, and to the actuator for the anti shudder flap, so 100% no splits in those 2 lines

its still the same 😞

i will have to try and read any codes from the OBD port but as I dont have any warning lights on im not sure it would even show anything

Are you sure it's not the dogbone or other engine mount as Munfred suggested earlier?

  • Author

I'll try and check that tomorrow thanks for the reminder

  • Author

hopefully have this sorted tonight, i have a leak !

i had checked the pipes so many times, but missed this one, the one coming off the servo itself, is split, local TPS has one in
