Budget All Season Tyres

Just to blow my own thread out of the water.....

Horrendous conditions today in Ireland led me to fit a set of tyres to the front and get rid of the "almost down to the legal limit" Pirellis. I badly needed some thread depth for the driving conditions over the next few days so I have fitted Maxxis Victra Sport VS5............I will fit the Acceleras further into the winter.

I know.....before anyone chimes in.........I'm bonkers!!!

Those Quatrac 5's aren't so expensive now

I'm guessing two new tyres are cheaper than your insurance excess and much much cheaper than injury; money well spent.

Increase your budget, there's almost nothing more important than your tyres. Budget buys will almost certainly lead to disappointment.

  • I wouldn’t say Vredestein are a budget tyre but a very good mid price brand and hold up well compared to premium brands.

  • What a shame when the Tyre Brand Snobbery continues and anyone just assumes less expensive tyres as in budget and on a budget are rubbish.   It is nice if people can comment from experience

Ahh....I'll be grand.

I've driven over 2 million kms in my working life without serious injury or death using my quirky tyre habits.

I might have a look at the Quatracs in the new year.......I'll need a new set by Jan or Feb.

FWIW they are very good tyres and good value as the wear rate is insane.  I have put 21K miles onto a set and they still have 6mm on the rears, 5mm on the fronts.    I fitted them a week before the 'Beast From The East' and they didn't let me down once and I had to drive 200 miles home right through the thick of it.

I fitted some PS4's this Summer as I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and due to the amount of tread left on the Quatrac 5's I kept hold of them for Winter.  I'll be swapping them over at the end of October before driving up to Scotland.   I'm hoping that Vredestein release more sizes in the Quatrac Pro or some other manufacturers start catering for this size.  As good as the PS4's are, I'll likely go back to using all-seasons when they've worn out.  The benefits don't negate swapping/storing two sets of wheels/tyres IMO.

That's good to know.

Thanks.

Would it be cheaper for you to buy a set of normal/sensible wheels and tyres and sell the ones you have.

Thanks AG Falco

I love the wheels

Are you looking to buy my 19's

Sorry only normal/sensible wheels tyres will fit on my cars! 😉

Little update after a couple of thousand kms.

The Maxxis are a lovely comfortable tyre, grip well in wet or dry........but I have lost about 5mpg. I'll put the Accelera on when these are ready to rotate.

No I haven't........they are OK (I'm very sensitive to tyre pressure)

It has settled kinda back to normal now.

My theory is that I fitted the tyres during that "killer tropical storm" that we had in Ireland a couple of weeks ago and I'd imagine that going up and down motorways in high winds and torrential rain is not very conducive to good fuel consumption.

At my recent service "budget" was indicated against my Vredestein Quatrac5 tread depth.

Mind you, they slso put "budget" against the oe Michelin spare. 😉

Yes , if you dive in to a pool you slow down.

It is the same when driving through a lot of water.

Was that AC you dealt with? That's a regular move theirs.

They tried to con me into replacing my unused space saver spare.

Also the try pretty much every customer at every service for new brakes. "yes sir your pads are rather worn and will need replacement in next 3 months max and your discs are heavily corroded". My response was "I'll look into it" so looked at them myself a day or 2 later, was at least 50% left in the pads and as there was loads of life in the discs I had them lightly skimmed, car ran for another 18 months before I replaced pads/discs all round myself for its first MOT. Absolute highway men!

No, the local Skoda main dealer, Bristol Street Motors. Pads 20% worn after 33,000 miles . Apart from the attempted upselling I have no adverse comments. The air con service was a fixed price whereas local independents just quoted a £20 lower "from" price -plus extra if it's the R1234 refrigerant. I've heard nothing good about AC.

Maxxis Victra Sports are a good tyre had them before.

Had a set of Accelera's once (was not my choice car came with them) and I could not wait to replace them, hopefully their winter tyre is better but I would have my doubts

It's time for me to replace the tyres on my Fabia and, having never had All Season tyres before, and considering the time of the year, I want to fit a set.

The required tyre size is 195 55 15 so I have a number of tyres of varying budgets to choose from.

As much as I would like to fit a set of the premium brands, I just can't justify forking out the extra money that they cost.  On the other hand I am unable to find much feedback on the Cheap-Cheap tyres so that is putting me off going down that path.

A good compromise that am quite keen on seems to be the Maxxis All Season AP2  but I am confused about the label information which appears to differ depending on which site you look at.  Some retail sites show the Fuel Efficiency of these tyres to be C but others show it as E.

The Maxxis site shows these tyres to be rated E for Fuel Efficiency so I am presuming that must be correct, however I would still like to know why some retailers show it as C.

Am I being a moron and missing something?

Despite my sending emails to both Maxxis and one of the retailers asking for clarification, disappointingly I have not received a reply.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

most likely an E for fuel consumption

winter / all season tyres have a higher rolling resistance so always suffer on fuel consumption, it wont be the end of the world however you will lose 2-3 mpg most probably

Thanks for that BigJase88. 👍

I have in fact just had a reply from a retailer that I messaged earlier who tells me that it is their supplier who has the tyre listed for fuel efficiency as a C rating and that they believe this to be an error.

To my mind these labels need to be correct otherwise what's the point.

Another thing that frustrates me is that when it comes to ordering a set of tyres, it seems to be a case of putting a finger in the air and guessing when they were manufactured.  Apparently it seems they can be anything from 1 month to 3 years old!

Thanks.

In fairness, and following on from my earlier post, this afternoon I have received a reply to my query from Maxxis.

Seems that it may be best to check on the manufacturers own website for information on any tyre you are interested in.

Thanks.

On a web site mentioned elsewhere on the forum, I've found all seasons tyres for a £40.

Aye, right. As they say in Scotland.

You can have the 'same tyre' but with different ratings.

This can be due to a new batch that has been retested.

Thanks AGFalco.......I was unaware of that 👍

This might not be your thing but it may be worth looking out for used wheels and tyres now and in the summer as I have picked up some real bargains over the last couple of years.

Last year I picked up a set of wheels for my old E36 BMW in late spring. They were off a 1 series BMW and were aftermarket alloys with Nankang budget winter tyres. The wheels and tyres were less than 2 years old and ok for my old soft top. I paid £100 for the set.

In the last 2 weeks I picked up a set of Audi A3 alloys with Goodyear Ultragrip winter tyres that are 2 years old and have over 6mm left on the all in good condition for all of £62 for a set of 4. I also picked up a set of Borbet Merc fitment alloys with 2 year old Dunlop Winter Sport tyres 2 have 6mm and 2 have 8mm on them and they were £82 for the 4.

A lot of people now are buying separate winter wheels and then change cars and sell the winter wheels off in summer when the value for them is very low. Mine were all 16s but quite a lot of 18s around quite cheap if you are willing to buy used wheels and tyres.
