Boot hatch rain water issue

Featured Replies

Hi all, I've looked through the forum and can't find anything on this but it must be a common problem. I have a mkii occy vrs FL and when it's been raining and I open my boot hatch it pours water into the boot, it's a bit of a bad design to be fair, u was wondering if there was a fix, IE... Some sort of trim I could buy to stop the water pouring off the side of the boot hatch.

Mk3 does it too, I've found opening it a foot first (30cm kids) then slowly raising it pretty much stops it. My last few cars have all done it to some extent. The Octavia has the heaviest tailgate I've ever experienced, wonder how much they weigh in at? Replacing it with a plastic one would probably give an extra 20mpg and 10mph !!

Mk1 also does it.

And my hatchback insignia also did it.

Fairly sure Mondeo hatchback does too,but cant say for definite.

Its an inherent issue with the lift back shape.

All it needs is a rubber filler strip along the bottom of the glass.

Few mk1 owners beaded some clear silicon into the channel to stop it accumulating..

Have Rain-X or similar on the glass so the water runs off.

Have a good coating of wax / sealant  on paint so water runs off.

Lift boot lid about 150cm and allow water to run off.

Simply clever engineer not involved in boot lid design
