Water in the spare wheel well

Hi guys,

 

Today while doing some light maintenance I happened to lift the boot floor and discover that there was about 1cm of water beneath the spare wheel.  Searching other threads it seems that this is not unusual.

Mine is an estate 57 Laurn&Klement, I bought second hand and has done around 60000 miles.

The tailgate seals appear to be in good order and I can see no obvious entry of water.  The carpets are all dry too.

Is it possible that water is being forced through the grommets/plugs in the bottom of the wheel well?

So, is it faulty joins?  The rear washer is still working so I assume the feed pipe hasn't become disconnected.  Where abouts in the system does it usually leak?

Mine is the same. Poked one of the plugs out for it to drain away. Need to look into the cause!

Also look into the air vents. You will find them down in the corners near the rear lights.

How did you fix it?

It's not necessarily the rear washer. Hatchbacks do not have them but still they suffer from the same thing. There have been a lots of topics about that I guess.

For example my father has the water in the boot problem but it's not possible to find the leak (he's got a hatchback - no rear washer). Watering the car doesn't help a lot. Probably the leak is small and it needs decent rain.

 

One forum member gave me an advice to cut the seals (probably you'll find the answer in the one of the topics) but I haven't been able to try it yet.

On the estate there is a ridge in the boot floor between the washer pipe and the spare wheel well. There is also a drain hole at the rear of the wheel arch on the same side of the ridge as the washer pipe. So, if the washer pipe leaks at the join where it is clipped to the boot floor the liquid collects along the very outside edge then runs out through the drain plug and shouldn't go anywhere near the spare wheel well.

Jevpls is incorrect as my 05 Hatch does have a rear wash wipe, bur on reflection the cause of Reimotim's could be the air vents taking into account the amount of standing water recently.

Although the rear wash wipe is standard here in the UK on the MkII Octavia (hatch and estate / combi), it isn't outside of the UK in some other markets, China being one...

The rear wash / wipe is the most likely culprit, be aware that the worst weak-point on the washer pipe isn't in the boot lid, it is down the left hand side of the boot, behind the CD multi-changer (or empty storage space on some cars) and it rarely wets the carpets. The first sign is usually the screen wash in the spare wheel well and then faulty rear number plates lights or the electric boot release, as there is an electronic module on the boot floor behind the carpet.

 

Are you brave enough to dip your finger in the water and taste it (screen wash has a unique taste!)  :D

 

Other than that try squeezing the boot seal to check:

 

1) it isn't full of water and...

2) if it is that the drain holes are on the top side of the seal instead of the bottom, preventing them from draining naturally. When the boot is slammed shut the water is forced out of the holes and into the boot. There have been several complaints about this in the past, poor design or a mistake during production, no one knows.

 

Or as mentioned the boot vents (behind the rear bumper) are stuck open...

 

Or the foam seals around the rear lights are perished / leaking...

 

Or the boot floor grommets are damaged / missing.

Interesting about that rear wiper on hatchbacks. In Latvia I've never seen one.

Isn't it a saloon in China?

Also op has an estate not hatch.

No one suggested the OP's car was a hatch, simply that the hatch still suffers the issue, even those without the rear wash wipe fitted.

 

The MkII Octavia is only available as a hatchback (limousine) or estate (combi).

I've just discovered major water problem in spare wheel well and now got to try and figure out what causing it.  I've got a 2009 Skoda Octavia 5 door hatchback.  Anything other than rear washer pipe I shoud check?

Thanks Silver 1011, that makes sense as did have a couple days recently when I couldn't get the boot open so may have been electronics problems.

That should help pinpoint the issue.

 

There is an electronic module behind the carpet on the passenger side which can get covered by leaking screen wash, similarly there is a micro-switch in the boot lock mechanism that can get wet if the boot seals hold and leak water too.

Had the same issue and after much searching on here and investigating on the car found that the boot seal was the problem.

 

I cut additional holes in the rubber at each corner on the bottom .... I checked/tried all other options first as I didn't want to cut the seal but in the end after exhausting all other options cut the holes and have had a dry boot since...... it would seem for whatever reason water was entering the seal and leaking out on the inside, the additional holes let the water out on the outside instead of filling the spare wheel well.

I used sealent around the vents and it stopped it

I actually had two leaks on mine.

 

One was the boot seal was full of water. Cut some holes in the bottom so the water can drain out.

 

The second was actually inside the wheel well where the wires for the parking sensors come in. There is a rubber seal with the wires coming through and it was coming through there. This happened after fitting a new parking sensor so I must have disturbed the wires and the seal. Dried it all off and completely covered it with some sealant (that black stuff that stays soft underneath) and it's been bone dry since.

Thanks for all the advice.  Turns out that my leak seems to be rainwater, not the washer fliud.

Done my own 'water test' after drying everything out and seem to have similar issue with seal not draining.  Also very crude check of closed alignment of boot and since I can get end of my little finger in by lamp on right side but not on left it appears that not on straight - wondering if this is pinching on seal in wrong way and causing problems?

I would move the boot lock striker down by a few mm. Remove both rear lights and give the body and seal a good clean with a damp microfibre. Then refit but get an alignment your happy with.

Also a couple of extra drain holes in the bottom of the boot seal is a good idea. Seen and used before on various different cars.

Then retest for leaks

hello guys,ive a 2008 i.6 fsi estate,and upon changing the spare wheel in noticed 2 pools of clear water sitting on two of the four grommits in my spare wheel well.it appears dry everwhere else and the wash wipe is working well.it appears the water has risen.any ideas.thanks
