Water in the spare wheel well

Featured Replies

I'd guess that either the grommets are leaking or as above the boot seal is full of water which is being squeezed out into the boot when the boot lid is closed.

hello, thankyou, ive inspected the rear boot seal and it seems in very good condition with no rips or tears and no water inside.have the grommets in the boot prone to corrosion/tear and wear /damage.ive read that the drian holes are incorrecly paced and by cutting a small v shaped hole in the bottom helps the water to escape.thanks.

IIRC the grommets are at the low points so any water in the well will likely gather at them. My original boot seal also seemed in good condition but a new one does seem to have sorted my issue. In order to see where the water was entering the wheel well I had to remove the plastic trim at the back edge of the boot ie the bit on the lip of the boot edge where the lock mechanism is located.

hello, thankyou,i removed the plastic trim and all dry and no indication of water running down into the well, from any direction. However i drove over 300 miles in heavy rain over christms and i again have water on,and around two off the four grommets.

I have a hatch and I've got a bit in mine too. Is it easy enough to change the boot seals? Where are these vents I've seen mentioned that can block?

Before replacing the seal try cutting the holes in the bottom. I thought mine was knackered but has been fine since cutting the drain holes.

The vents are behind the bumper I think but no idea where you access them from inside. The purpose of them is to let air flow out the car if you have the fans running but all the windows closed.

Any photos about? I guess like the holes on the top of the seal just underneath

Had the same problem with the work car. I cheated and drilled a few holes in the spare wheel well.

I had problem with water in spare wheel area.  Seal had some holes in upper surface which weren't letting water drain away.  My brother in law cut a couple extra holes on lower side of the seal and problem solved!  :-)

Same issue in my '12 FL hatch. I think the culprit is a poor seal where some cables exit through a rubber gasket slightly right of center. What sealant would people recommend to fix it?

Turns out it was the seal!  Holes on top and squashed by boot closing,  Needed to create new holes in rubber seal on lower side - sorted  :-)

Had this problem with my octavia, after a close inspection of the rubber seal i noticed two small cracks. i removed seal and re sealed with a tec 7 silicone and let dry before replacing. 12 months on no problems!
