VRS estate 2.0 diesel new front brake disks and pads

Featured Replies

Just had MOT and been mentioned that need to get the above changed in the not too distant future.

Local VAG garage has quoted me £220 all in for Pagid and an extra £30 for Brembo. Plus extra £30 for new brake fluid.

Does the onboard computer flash up a warning when its time for a change? I can’t tell there is a issue currently, no grinding or problems when braking.

Cheers all

There should be brake pad wear sensors which will come as a warning on the dash if the pads are low. What age is the car and what is your current mileage? Brake fluid usually changed at 3yrs, 5yrs, 7yrs etc.;)

Thank you

Car is now 5yrs old and has done 80k. I have had it 1 yr and do approx 12k miles a year. I don’t really know when the last time it was done.

Just looked it up out of interest as I usually do my brakes myself...

The parts are about £155/185 depending on brand.

So they're charging about £65 labour which isn't bad I guess and that's the actual difference in parts cost too.

Can't comment on which brand is better.  Last time I got performance pads I regretted it because they never reached optimum temp in normal road driving and squeeled all the time.

I thought the price was fair also

For the fronts there is only 1 sensor on 1 pad which helpful but not great.

Sometimes it's best to pull a wheel off and have a good look with a torch.  I'd be thinking about it at ~3mm.

195000km on my fronts and they are still OK.  I do use my brakes so i have no idea why they are lasting so well.

Can the warning light be reto fitted at all? Ive got the 2 liter non vrs.

You have a light, it relies on the brake pushing a wire embedded in plastic onto the disk. When the plastic wears down to the wire the circuit is made, the light comes on.

Unusual for one side of an axle to wear massively more than the other so for a long time cars have one sensor per axle.

However, lots can stop it working, bad connection, broken wire, crud and brake dust.

Much better to get a torch and check yourself, lots easier than messing with your wiring.

Last time I had the wheels off I didn’t see any wires or the sort!

It’s on the right hand front hub if it’s fitted. I have just deactivated mine as my new pads didn’t have a sensor.

Changed mine a short while ago, dealer quotes circa £300 for front discs and pads, I used a local motor factor and got standard branded parts for £95. The pads had the sensor on, but the originals on the car didn’t, so I just removed the sensor which was held on by a clip. Always better to check yourself re disc & pad wear, as I had a right game with the Skoda dealer who claimed the pads were 80% worn and had only a few thousand left, i then had another 20,000 miles out of them and when I did changed them they were only 70% worn....

Yes it is a classic,

"your brakes are only 5mm from the sensor do you want them replaced?

"That means they have only worn by 2mm then?"
