Front Caliper Pin Spinning

Featured Replies

I have replaced the front discs and pads on my Octavia vRS (11 plate) today but I have not been able to tighten the passenger side Caliper Pins as much as the driver side Caliper Pins.

I have tried switching the pins from each position and they seem to have the same issue.

The pins will go in but just spin when they reach the bottom, the caliper doesnt feel like it's going to come away.

I have drove home with the car like this (about 20 mins) and all seems fine.

Any advice would be great as I'm not sure what to do.

Looking at the bottom of the thread on that last photo looks to me like its been crossthreaded and rather mangled, that might be your problem. Having done mine yesterday I notcied theres quite a lot of room for movement on the entry angle into the thread, so easy to get it wrong if you're not careful.

Thanks for your input. Do you think it's dangerous to drive on or would you advise to not drive until new pins installed? 🙈

I sincerely hope the photograph at the top is not one you took with the caliper in place when the pin was "spinning"

If it is then it looks to me that you have not engaged the caliper in the carrier before fitting first the upper fixing bolt and then the lower, its spinning because its hanging in fresh air and only held on by the lower bolt.

I believe that the shiny unpainted part at the top should be located behind the carrier bracket.

Do not drive it if its only held on with one bolt.

The above is from memory so if i have it wrong then I apologise.

Editted, maybe my memory is at fault and the pads are not fitted in the photo.

Its common for the threads to pull out of the hub carrier. It looks like some of the threads are attached to the threads on your guide pin. I would inspect the threads and replace hub carrier or repair if necessary.

Don't drive it like that either

I've been told it's the Caliper Carrier that needs replacing, along with the pins.

I have been quoted £200+VAT for this part from the garage and £37.80+ for the pins. These prices seem a bit extreme to me.

I have called around but have been told they don't do a caliper for my model and it's a dealer only part at the moment. Can anyone confirm?

The car is a Skoda Octavia 2011 2.0 vRS Petrol. The Caliper Carrier is NSF.

Any help would be great.

312 mm carrier can be bought second hand. I got a complete set of calipers, carriers and lines for £50 a few weeks back.

Looks like it to me, you can see the redness through the front wheel. I think if it had 288mm discs and associated tackle, the calipers and carriers wouldn't be red.

Wait for someone else to confirm though, I'm just going off parts catalogue info, not real life.

If that's the case, would a Caliper Carrier from the Pre-FL model fit?  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2007-SKODA-OCTAVIA-VRS-2-0-TDI-BMN-PASSENGER-SIDE-FRONT-BRAKE-CALIPER-CARRIER/254207810239?hash=item3b2ff75abf:g:qx8AAOSwZrhafdBo

Yes it should fit as all vrs models have 312mm disc set up

As mentioned above is the first picture of the caliper fastened in place?

If it is then it looks like it is not fitted correctly.

Not just me then!!!

Nope. It is very easy to think the thread is in if you don't push the caliper home fully but you know that same as I do.

Yes been there done that got the T shirt.

I can see how the thread on the pin gets damaged as shown in the photo by someone lacking the tactile sense of feeling that its not engaged in a thread but graunching on the side of something, what I have never understood is how the threads can become stripped in the carriers, they are a large thread and its a small allen key size.

People must be using a hex bit in a socket with a large ratchet and really doing a gorilla job trying to fit a damaged thread after they work out the caliper needs pushing into position.

When I witness damage like that and see photos like the one above I really question whether I should give advice to unknown people on the net about working on brakes, there are some overconfident undercompetent people I know in real life that I would not want working on brakes or steering.

One year my old car failed the MOT on a seized brake caliper, I didn't have the time to sort it myself so got the garage to sort the problem.

A few years down the line I come to change the pads, lo and behold the slider pin threads are stripped, and held together by a wing and a prayer...

A stark reminder why I try to do all the maintenance myself.

Its due to corrosion, very common on this style of caliper fixing. Happened to me, on removal of the pin it took all the threads out, didn't even get to the assembly. Never had threads come out of a caliper bracket before but the threads in the hubs are chocolate.

Ok, understood!

Thanks for the suggestions and information.

Do you know if the VRS diesel has the same Caliper Carrier as the Petrol? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-13-SKODA-OCTAVIA-CR-VRS-2-0-TDI-6-SPD-MANUAL-RED-8151-CEGA-WHEEL-NUT-BREAKING/133135307679?hash=item1eff7b939f:g:a6wAAOSwkwJdSV6U

diesel is the same as a petrol.  also the same as a Golf GTI.

The pins are about GBP15 on ebay.

Try running a tap into the mangled hole.

I would also suggest you try and find a helper with a bit more experience than you.  It's your brakes brother!
