When to put winter tyres on?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

When is too early to put on winter tyres?

I understand the temperature range is usually when below 7 degrees C, but I will be away from home for the next 8 weeks (until Christmas), so is it worth throwing them on next week before I go?

I wouldn't have a problem putting winters on with the weather we are having now..........especially if you have to drive early in the mornings.

Never really too early in the UK, some people keep them on all year,

The night temp or day temperature has been near or below freezing in someplaces in the UK for a while already this Autumn and Winter Fuel is in the filling stations.

Seems like an idea to put them on before leaving rather than when it might get colder.

Running winter tyres at 20 *oc does not kill them, or kill you.

They're designed to come in to their own at 7 degrees and below. It will certainly be around or below that when you get back!

On the other hand it could be tropical weather around Christmas in the Suffolk area.

Below 7*oC this morning a bit North in the UK and not many slip sliding off the roads, well not yet.

A wee bitty sna blowing through as well.

What I didn't mention is that I'll be travelling 600 miles per weekend during that period - will be throwing the winters on next week, they may wear quicker, but realistically they'll just sit in the garage otherwise!

Put the winters on now

Generally anything below +20c is ok for winters

The +7c is usually estimated as the crossover point where winters become better than summers, it doesn’t mean they don’t work between +7 and +20c (just summers are slightly better at these temperatures)

10°C here and wet roads.  My Vredestein Quatrac5 felt very safe and secure on a known, wet roundabout. That's my usual giveaway for poor grip.

+1 for me, stick them on now, mine went on Wednesday.

Look at you all boasting of how hot it is where you are!

This has been typical of the temperatures we've been experiencing here for the last fortnight.

As for using winter tyres in the summer, I drove around in temperatures approaching 30°c for a few weeks in my winter tyred steelies when the Wheel Specialist balls up my alloys.  They were definitely more squirmy and less confident inspiring as my dedicated summers, but were fine over all.

I'm putting the Winter tyres on my other car as soon as we get a dry day when there isn't a gale blowing.

Third week in May then, Dave ?

Hopefully a bit sooner, if I believe the BBC Weather app (???????) then the weekend after next looks promising.

Then I can get the Summer wheels refurbed after SWMBO did some "kerb parking" :wall:

Oh yes the meteorological experts of the popular press 🧐 - it's currently blowing a gale here so it won't be today B)

put mine on last week, mainly due to the fact that my wife's on the roads at 6:30am, and were off to Glasgow this weekend, so wanted them on and "tested" before racking up some mileage on them this weekend.

good job i did, all were well out of balance, 1 wasn't hold air properly and i couldnt fit the spigot rings properly, so my local kwik fit ended up helping me out!

Chucked mine on, ready for anything that happens this winter... If not, atleast I've got use out of them!

Ignore the dirty car, it's having its pre winter wash and protection on Saturday!

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine would've been on by now if I didn't need a new set.

Avon Ice Touring have been very good & still have sufficient tread to go again, but are now 6/7 years old.

Michelin Alpin 6's being fitted Wednesday.
