Engine fan

Featured Replies

Before I go to the dealers, just thought someone might know something about this.

The car has only done1,200 miles and is 7 weeks old but the engine fan comes on perhaps 3 to 4 times a week, I only do about 18 journeys a week mostly to work( 7 miles) on normal roads with very little hold ups. It has happened on longer journeys. This morning I drove from home to a shop on the way to work for about 2 miles mostly in a 30 limit, and it was going when I stopped. All gauges etc. showing normal, and turns off when stopped when expected.

Have been gentle with it so far as despite people saying you do not need to run a new engine in these days, so not really sure what this could be, any ideas?.

Doing short journeys is not good for the dpf.

Maybe it is DPF regen kicking in. VAG DPF is nice little app, it tells you basically when will it happen next. If revs are above normal when car is standing (around 1000) and engine is warm, it also can be sign of active regen.

I'd say this is a normal DPF regen

Only half my mileage is short runs, rest are 50 miles plus, about once a week.

So for a non technical person, DPF regen is OK?

Aircon can also make fan(s) work without any fault situation being present, nor the engine coolant being overly hot. Triggered by refrigerant pressure instead of coolant temperature (or regeneration related activity).

Actually only had air con on once since new(just for the missus), prefer a window when the weather is like it has been.

Not that then.

Yes, if you let it do its job. On my 150tdi it kicks in when soot load is 24 grams and runs until it is at 5-6 grams. And then, it takes around 250km of city driving or up to 500 km of highway driving to start next regen. You have thread in first reply with useful info.

It's good to run the air con regularly to keep the seals in the system lubricated.

It certainly sounds like regeneration. It could be that it is not completing a regen and keeps trying. The system will try every 450 miles or so if there is no successfull regen.

This is an fully automatic function that prevents too much build up of soot in the Diesel Particlulate Filter (DPF). If the DPF become too clogged then it cannot be cleaned without being removed from the car at a significant cost. However, dont panic as the system should protect you.

I suggest you check out the section in  the manual (regeneration) so that you understand the significance of any warning lights that may show that your filter is becoming clogged and tells you that you should get the enigne up to temp (note not the water temp but the engine) and then drive at 1750-2000 rpm for at least 20 minutes. That should fire and complete a regen.

Usually if it is a regen in progress and you stop and switch off you can smell the engine is hot (burning rubber smell ) and the fan will continue to run. Also tick over speed will increase usually to about 1000 rpm.

Given the car you have and the usage it does seem most likely that the car is tryhing to run regens. Take it for a good spin as outlined above and see if that reduces the incidence. I have a copy of the self teach guide on the engine. If you would like a copoy pm me with an email and I will forward it to you.

Definitely sounds like regeneration to me. I'm a high miler and its happening a couple of times a week too. You can generally tell its happening when start/stop doesn't work even though you know the car has had/is in the middle of a very good run.  The fan can also run on after stopping the car at home to complete the cycle.

Right, thanks all for your comments and pointers to previous threads, have learnt a lot!,did have 18 plate kodiaq from new and 16 plate superb, nearly new, all same engine, and had nothing like this, which is what rang my alarm bell.

Think I will give it a couple of good runs and see if it settles over the next few weeks.

SAGALOUT thanks for explanation in plain English, will contact you if problem persists.

Had my first regen today - start stop off on the commute to work, and cooling fan on after the engine stopped.

On the way home, the car was holding onto a higher gear in eco mode (3rd gear at 30mph) and when coasting it was at 1000rpm rather than 800ish. And no stop start.

Gave it a few more revs getting up to speed and by the time I'd done the 11 mile commute it had completed, idle back to normal and stop start had erm, started again 😊
