Rim size change

Featured Replies

Hi there friends, my 2011 Fabia has 205/45r16 tyres, I want to change to a ‘higher profile tyre’  say 60-70 aspect ratio, what can I do here for running the car on same diameter tyres?

any experience on this one?

thanks.

i appreciate I need to change alloys too, that’s fine, but I need to know which to buy.

i want  to think I can get 205/60 15 or something. But unsure on the diameters and alloy fitting...

I believe fabia's that had 15" alloys as standard were on a 195/50 tyre (a 205/50 r15 might work without giving too much of a speedo error, they may not fit without fouling though).

Why do you wish to change to such a high profile on a 15" rim? To get a 60 or 70 profile on you will likely need to drop down to a 14" (steel?) rim to avoid majorly altering your rolling diameter with something like a 175/70 r14 tyre.

Probably your best bet would be to find used standard fitment 15" fabia wheels and stick to standard (or very close to) tyre sizes.

What sizes of tyre are listed on the inside of the fuel filler cap?

195 55 15?

That’s great, I was hoping there would be great info on this.

thanks.

is there any major downside to a slightly narrower tyre?

195/55R15  or  185/60R15

Cheers lyminton,

is that wheel size for the mk2 Fabia estate? I could find that info anywhere.

They ( 15 '' ) are cheaper and will give you a better smoother ride.

The wheels are less likely to get bent by potholes.

Less likely to aquaplane but won't produce the same ultimate dry grip.

Thanks AG Falco

I would suggest either 6Jx15 ET29 rims with 185/60R15 tyres or 6Jx15 ET35 rims with 195/55R15 tyres.

This will keep the outside diameter of the tyres similar to your current 205/45R16 tyres.

VW Passat alloys were available in the ET35 size and often come up on ebay.

Here's Alcar 7415 steel rims 6Jx15 ET29.

As you can see from the photo, they have 20 holes.

My advice is to go with 185/60R15 tyres on the ET29 rims as that will increase your front and rear track by 12mm compared to the ET35 rims. However, the VW Passat alloys that I often see on ebay look nice so would also be a good option.

If you are willing to raise your gearing a little, 185/65R15 might fit the ET29 rims and 195/60R15 might fit the ET35 rims. However, it might be hit and miss whether you get any rubbing with these larger outside diameter tyres fitted.

Another option is 185/65R14 tyres on 5Jx14 ET35 steel rims, or even 185/70R14 tyres which have a similar outside diameter to 195/60R15 tyres that I mentioned above.

Here's 5Jx14 ET35 steel rims.

However, as you are used to 16" wheels, I would suggest that you go with a 15" option.

AG Falco, perfect, those exact reasons I want to change. 👍

i will be on the lookout for some 15” alloys. With the same stud diameter, what offset would I need? I assume the same as the existing ones?

What size wheels/tyres are on the car at the minute?

Or a little less.

Thanks AG Falco

As @Ricardo345 had managed to create two similar threads I've now merged them together.
