Skoda Citigo Tachometer

Featured Replies

Hi,

My Skoda Citigo is basic. It only has a speedometer. I’m thinking of buying something like this: Rev Counter

It’s a simple Rev counter. It’s cheap, so if it doesn’t work it doesn’t really matter although I know i’m protected under eBay. My question is, how would I wire something like this into the Citigo? I can see a black, red, white and green wire. I’ve got no idea where any of these would lead to. If anyone has any idea or has done this before then let me know please!

Nick

It says it comes with instructions, so they should tell you which colour wire goes where.

I fitted something similar to a Reliant 40 years ago. 4 wires will be:

Ignition switched power

Ground

Dashboard lights

Signal

Signal wire used to go to the coil on the old-style universal tachos. Not sure where you would pick up the signal on a modern car

Was it useful in Reliant? I guess you heard engine pretty well anyways. 😄

It was actually quite useful knowing where the red line was. So much engine noise in those cars that it sounded like 6000rpm when it was really only 4000rpm. i could make much better progress when I could see when to change gear.

The Robin 850 was actually quicker in a straight line than my Citigo - 39bhp, but it only weighed 500kg with a full tank of fuel and me in the driver's seat. It was even OK in the corners, as long as I kept my foot flat to the floor.

I drove Reliants for 4 years, never crashed.

I only had a motorbike licence at the time, and UK law classes small 3-wheeled cars as legal to drive on a bike licence. Sold it as soon as I passed my car test, bought a Rover SD1.

Looking again at the specs for that tacho, I don't think it will be much use in a Citigo with it's 3 cylinder engine.

They work by counting the number of spark pulses in a fixed period of time. A 4 cylinder engine has 2 sparks per revolution, but a 3 cylinder only has 1.5 sparks per rev - tacho will under-read by 25%.

Be even worse if the tacho is designed to work in cars with a distributor, rather than individual coil packs. I assume that the Citigo uses coil packs? Coil pack will give one pulse every 2 revolutions.

Ask the seller to send you a scan of the instructions before you buy?

You might be better off looking at Retrofitting the PID unit, these have a built in rev counter and the added benefit of maps, Bluetooth etc.
