DSG Box or Engine/Electrical issue??

Featured Replies

@ArranMac1

Reason i am asking is i have see plugs fitted that were the ones recommended for a CAVE engine.

That was the ones before Skoda / VW changed to the next plugs they recommended and the change of gap.

That is the same plugs as recommended for CTHE engines.  (never trust those for long, they were and are crap in a Twincharger.)

So be worth a trip to mechanic again he doesn't have the diagnostic equipment but the workshop next to him have main dealer equipment & did the reading last time, oh right is that something they would know how to do?

No signs of smoke or anything noticeable, starts perfect only kind of glitch is after a short journey needs a little bit extra key turn to start, idle is usually all good only slight issue cold mornings can just feel its a little bit lumpy until warms up a bit then its fine, I assume what it does in driving modes is normal? Basic auto idles about 800 sports or manual mode bumps up to about 1200?

Best I can tell you now is they were NGK laser platinum unsure on part number until I can get in touch with mechanic

If no misfires just now the plugs are just something to be aware of in the future. Be sure what people are fitting.

Be sure they know what they are doing as well.  Misfires do not always log fault codes if not enough in a cycle.

It should start from cold at around 1,100 rpm and in 30-40 seconds drop back to around 800 rpm.

That is in P.

Sitting in 'D' & foot on brake the rpm should be lower than when you move the shifter back to 'S'.

Be sure you have a clean air filter.

Another suggestion as I have intermittent bulb out light but all bulbs are good could all my troubles be down to a bad earth? Been told to have a look at the earth straps from the engine???

Spoken to my mechanic again he is going to check on plugs used, has spoken to his Gearbox mate who has worked on a few DSG's & thinks its still an issue with that most commonly this thingy???.......

Yep the mech unit is a common failure however it’s more than likely would fire up a fault code and you’d have more gearing issues, Doesn't seem to be any of the usual tell tale signs that your mech unit is on its way out.

Have you check the reg plate bulbs?Common for people to change them to leds and  buy cheap ones that aren’t canbus friendly.

  • Author

Had a butchers at all bulbs none are LED as far as I can tell, any ideas where these earth straps are on the car or how many? Anything I can rule out would be a bonus that's for sure, still being told by quite a few people to replace coil packs too as a usual reason for power loss/misfire?

Just thought of something relating to my problem may be relevant or not??

Pretty much every time it has done what ever it is its doing once it releases & goes there is what I can only describe as a strong smell of fuel/exhaust fumes.??

That makes it sound  fuel related and some extra/in burnt fuel is getting let through. Could as I said be a sensor or one of 2 fuel pumps playing up. I genuinely think your only answer will be to get a proper tool plugged in see If it’s flagging up anything.

Started mine up there and had a look, last it was rab was 3:30pm yesterday so it’s been cold all night and idled at 7400 rpm, yours should be around the same......

Hi guys me again with a what would you do question.........????

I am taking your advice getting VCD diagnostic check done plus live diagnostic to check all sensors etc while running but my question now is:-

1 - Take it to my local Skoda main dealer for it to be looked at by their "Master Technician" for the sum of £70

or

2 - 100 mile round trip to take to an ECU/Remap specialist that has all main dealer gear & knows the in's and out's of the VAG engines & DSG gear boxes who will charge £35 for full diagnostic

Just don't know what to do for the best??

Your pic is that as custom display or do you have additional display set up boost gauge etc?

My personal choice would be the remap ecu specialist as if they might possibly have access to a rolling road or will plug it in and road test it whereas Skoda will plug it in and hit you with 100 problems and a huge bull IMO.

Cheers for the honest advice I was kind of leaning that way he has full rolling road set up, will run full diagnostics for couple of hours see if can work out what's going on, plus he is one of my mates good friends so if get it running sweet again cheeky discount on a remap might be possible.

Ah cool funky little gauge they cost much to have fitted? I know there is some where to get my oil temp back on the MFD but something to do with main dealer changing stuff??

Wow looks like a beast from front even with the bumper off, love the bonnet vents too! 👌

The guage was only £60 and runs off the odb port so no wiring or cutting up vaccum hoses...Downside is it reads in absolute pressure however it’s easy enough to work out, Check my build thread out for more pics.

My bad I deleted that photo of the car in bits as I uploaded  it by accident.

Ah not bad looks smart probably still out of my skillset to fit lol, plus have no idea on looking at pressures etc not exactly a performance driver coming from an Aygo to the VRS was scary enough but soon get used to the power thats for sure.

Lol cool you are obviously a tad more handy on motors than myself!

Its all part in parcel with learning about your car man, I bought my fabia not knowing it even had a supercharger.....A few years later and there's not many nut and bolts I haven't had my hands on.

Wish I had that confidence lol, Im very short fused, have no where to work on a motor or a single tool of any use, would love to have the ability to give it a go maybe once my kids are older knowing me we still have the Fab with about 200k on the clock by then 🤣

Well trip to ECU guy yesterday 7 completely different error codes from brake issues, electrical relay, fuel & compression loss.

During live data check zero missfires but what did flag up was break in camshaft sensor, from his experience on a 1.8tsi golf that had the camshaft sensor go down causing chaos & confusion to the ECU electrical wise, he said due to it being magnetic?

Have read that with similar faults to camshaft sensor failing there is also a solonoid on the top of the engine towards the back of the coils?

Still since the plugs were change no more engine management lights but is still doing its weird thing once or twice a week??

How hard is it to get to camshaft sensor as he suggests before replacing to do Ohms test on it both cold & warm engine?

Suggestions advice please 🙏

Crank shaft position sensor bank 1 sensor A? that’s the Cam sensor, If so that’s looking towards a stretched chain.

”The adjuster is full out and the chain is loose. Your cams are out or crank
And will put them codes in the ecu

You can check this in live data.
Or check the chain.

If the chain tensioner is out more then 15 mm I’d be fitting a new kit.”

Eek that don't sound good though, would it not effect my engine more if chain wasn't quite right?

Add to my issues or possibly the cause would appear to have sprung & engine leak, clear oily fluid can't see any obvious leaks most of it is pooled on the tray just behind the rad, other issue have now seen my coolant bottle has dropped below min level???? Could be I guess pipe, rad or water pump I'm guessing 🤔🙄

Water pump is a possibility if it is coolant.  Ties in with your symptoms, Water Pump / Supercharger Clutch is a consumable.

So you need to find the source of the leak, radiator, intercooler, pipes, water pump or where.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/415178-fabia-mk2-vrs-twincharger-water-pump-part-numbers-supercharger-clutch

Hopefully you have only one issue.

But the MCU needs checking to see no oil leak there.

Basically you need your car on a ramp and a Mechanic checking it out, or if all you have is a Main Dealer Tech, one of those.
