Tyres Sportline 280 19"

Featured Replies

Right i know this will sound strange but i run a tyre shop but was wondering if you could recommend what yourselves find suitable? Money isn't an issue because i get them for cost price. Currently i have 235/40/19 Potenzas S001 but thinking Pilot Sport 4S but also likes of Vredesteins, hankook or uniroyals look good. I don't rag the car around as much as i used to when i had VRS but still would want something decent. Also understand that lot of S3 owners are switching to 245/40/19 due to better pricing and range... Looking forward to your suggestions... Cheers

I use both Vredestein Quatrac 5's and Michelin PS4's on my 280.

The Vredesteins are all-season but are still much better than the stock P7's that came from the factory, now it's colder and the roads are icy the Vredesteins are back on the car.  No issues at all, I think if I may just buy another set when these and the Michelin PS4's wear out but ideally I'd like to run two sets of wheels for Summer/Winter but I'm still uncertain whether the pro's outweigh the cons. Anyway....

I got the PS4's fitted early last Summer and I'm impressed with them, easily the best performance tyre I've tried over the years.  Dry/wet grip/braking is very good.  Though I did notice them losing grip on cold mornings when switching directions to exit some tight roundabouts , but that's to be expected of a Summer tyre on borderline icy, wet roads.  Whilst I do find them quite smooth and fairly quite on a good stretch of tarmac, they do overly drone on a surface that is remotely poor.  Would I buy them again, definitely.

Other Summer tyres I considered were the Vredestein Ultrac Vorti and Hankook Ventus S1 Evo's S2 (3 not available in this size when I bought) but whilst the reviews on those can vary the PS4's seem to be consistently praised across the board.  I ruled out the latest Conti Sport Contacts as historically I've found the wear rate of Conti tyres to be very poor and early reviews on the SC6 indicated they were shocking, maybe less of an issue with AWD?

Some good reviews available from tyrereviews.co.uk:

Thank you for your input mate...i used to like Contis but as you say the wear rate is shocking...the Potenzas i have for summer are not even half worn and 18 month old but then i live on island and only do about 7k miles per year but i find the S001s quite good but they are noisy but not overly noisy. Good idea about winter/summer wheel combo as having worked in tyre business for few years now i personally prefer as little contact as possible someone has with my wheels. I run winter tyres on 18" golf R rims with 225/45/18 Falken Eurowinter....for some reason i keep coming back to PS4S ...

Watch that youtube vid I posted which compares the 3 Michelin offerings.  After seeing that and getting advice on here I reckoned that the PS4S' would likely be overkill for my cars usage and the PS4's 'would do'.  Though if cost isn't as much of an issue for you then get the PS4S' 😁

On the 280 Superb, I would go with 7.5Jx18 ET46 5/112 57.1 alloy rims and 245/45R18 tyres, or 6.5Jx17 ET38 5/112 57.1 steel rims and 225/55R17 tyres. 245/45 fit 7.5J to 9J width rims, so fitted to the narrowest 7.5J width rims the tyres bulge out a bit thereby helping to protect the alloy rims from kerbing damage.

Four choices of OEM Superb alloy rims:

Goodyear Asymmetric 5 245/45R18 tyres (about £90)

My Superb 272 came with the Bridgestone S001 you have in 235/40R19 standard on the 8J Vega alloys which have a noise rating of 71db but they are quieter (whether it is better soundproofing on the Superb) than the Michelin PS4S I ran on my 336bhp Octavia RS245 which had wider 8.5J rims with 235/35R19 Michelins with the same 71db noise rating. Both are good tyres but the Michelin's are £20 per tyre more to me (not an issue for you probably). I am fairly gentle on my tyres due to covering 70% of my mileage on the motorway at 60-70mph and they tend to last me at least 20,000 miles per set.

If anything it actually helped me in deciding the PS4's were more than adequate for normal road use and that I'd be in the area of diminishing returns if I spent more on the PS4S'...but like I said if cost isn't a problem for you then....

Maybe that's my problem mate, if i had a set budget say 450quid i would probably know by now. Few years ago i had set of Conti sport 5s on mk2 VRS and really liked them despite people having mostly negative comments, now i like the S001s i got with the car, i guess it's all down to what people expect from tyres, issue with living on island 9x5 miles is that mostly tyres perish before they actually wear out due to short trips, braking&accelerating all the time, sharp turns at low speeds and sat outside on elements...
