Would it help I I told you it probably has a Peugeot engine?!?!?

Not really, I had one several years ago, I reckon it'll possibly outlive me 🤣

I don't think the 3.0 V6 diesel is a Peugeot engine. Merc spent millions developing it and as I owned that engine in a c350Cdi C class I can certainly say it's a wonderful engine

I stand corrected, you are correct ... Didn’t properly check the spec 😊

I was looking at very nice examples of these for what I paid for my leased 2 year old Octavia vRS. They're stunning machines but I'm a wimp and the expected and unexpected bills put me off in the end. Good luck!

I have just seen how cheap I can buy a Bentley Flying Spur.

Petrol is 99.9p now 🙂

Yep, this might be the last chance to buy a big combustion engined car...

Nearly new Skoda Superb Estate - £39k

Bently Flying Spur 2012 - £39k

Aston Martin Rapide 2011- £39k

MB E63 2016 - £29k

BMW M6 2017 - £40k

Lots of wild stuff out there for the same as an (admittedly very expensive) Superb

But the exotic cars aren't available on cheap PCP or PCH deals. Cash price of the Superb is irrelevant for most people!

Tempting for the minority though as long as you can afford the maintenance.

Although not the budget for a new superb....with current fuel prices im seriously tempted to buy an old big barge and waft round for a bit.  Saw a nice S-class under 2k I fancied trying. The mrs wont allow me to get an old XJR or the like🤣

That MB looks like quite a nice deal. You can afford to fix it if it goes wrong (well fix it once). I imagine the Bentley and Aston will need a remortgage if they go wrong (I'm thinking mainly of the Aston :) )

Until financial ruin started to take an interest in my life, I was thinking I might go for one last silly car before I am too old and had shortlisted the Mustang as a top 3 contender. Probably won't happen now, but you never know. It's one of the last of the n/a V8s still in production. Mind you they were talking about a RHD C8 Corvette before the world tuned into compost. Maybe in a few years time that might be the perfect pre-retirement car for a middle-aged woman.

@Aspman You like your big torquey motors, if you can afford it I'd go for it. Speed limiters will be on new cars before the decades out too 😞

Just nipped up the road to view the silver CLS Shooting Brake.

I guess with online photos you're always going to pass the '6 foot test' i.e. you're sufficiently far enough away to not see the scratches and scuffs etc.

- The underside of the front bumper has been heavily kerbed.
- The nearside front corner of the bumper has had a poor quality repair and paint job (orange peel effect, peeling lacquer close to the plastic grills and a painted parking sensor rubber).
- The headlights, front bumper and bonnet are heavily stone chipped. The headlight lenses look like they've had a good sandblast.
- The windscreen is non-original and has a large chip in it (not an MOT failure).
- A very small rust bubble at the leading edge of the roof above the windscreen.
- All four alloys have had a cheap refurb, only the outer surfaces have been painted, the inner surfaces weren't cleaned and the brake dust is now sealed in with lacquer.
- Three Pirelli P-Zero tyres of varying tread depth, both rears on the wear bars and one of the fronts has a brand new budget tyre.
- All four door edges have been up against a wall and the paint is deeply chipped.
- Rear bumper has a few loading and parking rashes.
- Nearside rear door card torn (only a very small nick).
- Drivers side lower door also nicked in several places along the very bottom edge.
- Front passenger seat holed, looks like a zip or something has caught it.
- White marks around the sides of the boot, on the headlining and on the inner edges of both front seats (looks as though they've carried something long with the seats down without protecting the interior).
- Drivers side door seal warn where the driver has rubbed it getting in and out.
- Drivers seat shiny and slippery, probably not helped by the cockpit shine covering everything.
- Only just started, probably down to being stood for several weeks.
- It is due a service now (120,000 miles / June 2020).

On a positive note, the floor mats were immaculate, the number of scratches and scuffs were low given the age and mileage, the engine bay looked clean and there was nothing hanging off underneath.

Impeccable Mercedes-Benz main dealer service history too...

Service 1: 2014 - Warrington @ 12,000 miles.
Service 2: 2015 - Warrington @ 22,000 miles.
Service 3: 2016 - Maidstone @ 32,000 miles.
Service 4: 2017 - Brighton @ 46,000 miles*.
Service 5: 2017 - Brighton @ 60,000 miles*.
Service 6: 2018 - Brighton @ 75,000 miles* (included transmission oil change)
Service 7: 2019 - Brighton @ 89,000 miles.
Service 8: 2019 - Brighton @ 105,000 miles.

* whilst on a Mercedes service plan.

Over that period it has had three breakdowns:

1) 2017 - Vacuum pump
2) 2017 - Puncture
3) 2020 - Puncture, unable to remove locking wheel nut.

It had a software update in April 2014, another one in 2017 and I'm told it is being flagged under a Mercedes Technical Bulletin for another but outstanding software update of some sort.

MOT history looks OK, a couple of fails on uneven tyre wear and what appears to be bent front alloy wheels, although they've been refurbished. It was last MOT'd by the current non-Mercedes dealer and has an advisory for one of the rear tyres being close to the legal limit. I confirmed today  that the tyre is indeed worn.

A lot of car for £10,345, but one that if you're like me needs a couple of grand spending on it to make it great again...

- A pair of tyres - £300
- A full non-main dealer service - £350?
- An exterior detail and interior valet - £400 (could do myself I suppose)
- All four alloys refurbishing - £300
- Bodywork restoration door edges, front and rear bumpers touched up - £500?

Possible needs:

- New battery - £100
- Gearbox oil change - £250

Of all that only the tyres and service need doing now (£650).

A good car, but I'm not sure it is worth £2,000 more than my current E-Class. I guess the low cost of the CLS is being offset by the equally low value of my car. They offered me £10,000 for my current car, claiming it is 'booked' at £9,650.

Hey-ho, the itch is scratched for a few more weeks! :D

Good thorough appraisal  I was taught (by a chap at British Car Auctions) to start at the back of the car and walk backwards to the front of the car scanning up and down as you go. The theory was as car designers deliberately style the car to draw your eye along its lines, the reverse walk breaks this up and helps your eyes from being drawn in any particular direction through the cars styling.

Nice to see it's only really had one 'mechanical' in 120K miles. The nicest diesel I ever owned was that engine.

Yeah I am giving some thought to getting a slightly older Rapide. I think unfortunately life at the moment doesn't agree with me, i.e. getting a baby seat in the back might not be great.

But I agree, this stuff will all be gone soon so I can I can get and run one for a bit maybe I should.

  • 1 year later...

The day has come where i covet a Mercedes.

Just a no frills looking one in the same colour as a Peugeot 504 i had in the 1980's.

Just posting here rather than in 'Visually my car of the day'.

I couldn't work out how the petrol pump was connected to the fuel hose for a while   :D

How close are you getting to its 42 miles supposed range on its traction battery ?

Do you think the PHEV should be allowed the green licence plate sticker/section  ?

the 1,330 cc engine would do my legal speed driving just fine these days.

I would not have any car without a rear wiper so many saloons or even hatchback EV's would be a no no.

I just was taken by the looks with not much bling. and the beautiful interior that i had a nosy into.

They are not Green Sticker cars.

There are Plug in Hybrid threads in the EV Section of Briskoda.
