Adaptive cruise control

Featured Replies

I have a new Karoq 1.5TSI S-EL with adaptive cruise control. Does anyone know if the front detection can be turned off to enable me to use the cruise control as non adaptive?

Ta muchly in advance.

I don't think so but would be interested to find out why you'd want it like that?

Hi. Thanks for the reply.

The reason I asked is that a few days ago whilst traveling on a main road with acc engaged, a car coming towards me turned across my path into a minor road. There was nothing remotely dangerous as there was plenty of time, but the acc considered it needed to brake fairly hard. Fortunately there was nothing following me so no harm done.

I was hoping that acc could be used as conventional cc when on other than motorways.

A quick tap on accelerator will override that. It is a tad aggressive on turning  cars in front.  You need to be aware of the feature and get ready to tap accelerator.

Yes, you have to pay full attention at all times and be ready to give the accelerator a gentle blip.......also needed when someone turns off in front (left or right) the ACC needs to be reassured even thought there seems be be plenty of space/time available.

My biggest gripe is when the road is undulating, gentle downward slopes bring on the brakes even though the power is going to be needed a couple of moments later.....again full attention is needed to 'assist' the ACC.

Always used to wonder why some drivers were forever on and off the brake on trunk roads

Thanks for the great replies. I admit I wasn't aware that the acc could be overidden by a tap on the accelerator. I assume it is a sharp tap as I have found that gently accelerating when the acc is engaged does not affect tyhe acc, but the car returns to the set speed when the accelerator is released.

I like ACC on the Karoq very much more on motorways than ordinary cruise control that I had on on my last 2 cars, but it's not perfect.  The main -ve for me is it's slow to react to a new vehicle appearing in front of me (cutting me up on the M25 for instance) - takes a while to lock on to the new car rather than the vehicle previously in front - now one car ahead.  When it does lock on, the cutter-upper will be too close and the system then over reacts and car brakes sharply.  This is similar to what happened to you I suppose.  These 2 links to old threads here are worth reading and there'll be other later ones as well

I suspect your car is set on the default distance to car in front, which I found too great anyway and following advice on this forum, I adjusted this to significantly shorter, but not so close as to be tail gating the man in front.   Has 2 benefits, there's much less braking in my journeys overall anyway, for some reason I can't quite explain and there's not enough room, except for the most determined lane dodger, to cut me up in the 1st place.  I always have to be aware of the traffic around me still, in particular watching out for lane dodgers, but that's no bad thing and I do find driving with ACC surprisingly less tiring than without.  In your situation described, thus set closer, the ACC maybe would never have locked on to the car going across your path at some distance away, but don't know for sure.

Once locked on to a vehicle in front, the car reacts quickly and in emergency, no doubt much faster than my thinking distance, so probably safer than no ACC.  Be aware that the manual says it's only for motorway driving, but I think with the distance to car in front set to fairly small it's probably OK for normal road use, but there are some circumstances to be wary of then that have been talked about in this forum occasionally.

I used to use Ordinary Cruise Control on ordinary roads if not too much traffic around, as slow as 30mph & even down to 20mph and do want to gradually start using ACC on these these non motorways again.  Maybe I'm a slow learner.
