Random emergence of whistling around drivers window

Featured Replies

Not had any issues blasting up and down the motorway since buying my Octavia in January but a couple of days ago a whistling sound started around the drivers window area and its rather annoying.

I researched the problem on here and some blame is placed on the large wing mirrors and some blame the lack of seals around the doors compared to say a VW Passat.

However, why has it only just decided to start whistling? I dropped the window a little bit and it stopped but this resulted in inevitable buffeting so I had to put the window back up and put up with the whistling.

I wonder if there's any connection to the frost we've had over the last couple of days. Frosts have been rare this winter and there isn't one due tomorrow so I'll have to go compare!

When we had the storms recently I noticed more noise, suddenly, in a cross wind. To me, modern cars are so much quieter. I mean in the 1960s and 70s you could feel the draughts!

No experience of this, I get no wind noise from my mirrors.  If it was Ok before, and now it has suddenly changed,  I would check that the the seals are still in place - comparing with the passenger side. Can't find it but I think I can recall someone else complaining that a seal had become detached

Well this morning there was no frost and no whistling from the window. Could be coincidence but a frost is forecast tonight so if the whistling returns tomorrow, it's a safe bet the frost is involved.

I'd a Hyundai Coupe SIII. Frameless windows. One severe winter day with snow and ice clinging, I realised from the whistle on the motorway the window was not able to close normally.

Can't imagine how frost could affect the Octavia unless there is ice blocking the runners? Good luck solving it.

Well Friday morning it was frosty again and the whistling returned. So far we have perfect correlation between the whistling and frost.

Doc, have you tried resetting the window's upper stop point?  Might be worth trying:

Had the exact same issue as you over the more 'wintery' Winter weather recently. Whether it was frost or ice itself concealed in the seals, or the seals themselves becoming harder and contracted in the colder weather, I definitely got some whistling emerging during a long drive to Southampton a few weeks ago. It was so prominent, I stopped the car at a petrol station to investigate - and came to the same conclusion.

Since then, I've sprayed and wiped down some silicone oil on all window (and door) seals to try and loosen them up a bit. Had cold weather since and no whistling as returned, although that could be luck and not my own fix 🧐

EDIT: ^ I watched the video above after writing this. Good share @IamGaz

Either way, I don't think it's a bigger issue than first thought. Just bloody annoying (especially if you're anything like me and notice minuscule noise changes in the car)
