 wonder if someone may be able to help me out with some advice or even a map that would get me going

I’ve rebuilt my engine after having internal components lightened and balanced , new rings and shells etc and fitted a GTB1756vk turbo,

 my original ecu is remapped to around 200bhp was running a pd 150 turbo, fmic ect  

my question is i hear they dont run at all well unless mapped for the gtb turbo,

I'm unsure on the whys ,, why they don't run ?? or do they run ok ??

,If someone can shed some light on this or what needs tweaking in my map that would be very much appreciated..

I do plan on having her rolling roaded once run in a few thousand miles..

You don't need to run the engine in, simply get it properly mapped right now, it takes 20 minutes to run the cam and followers in at a fast idle, pistons and rings need full throttle runs to bed in, bearings only need an oil supply.

I’ve built many engines and always run them in for 2500 mile , I run my tdi’s on mineral oil the first 500 mile then change oil again to long life vag oil at 1500 and then again at 2500 miles and no driving like I stole it to at least that mileage , I’ve never had an oil burner or any issues and consider that the correct process as old school  , but each to there own like but this works for me 

If you don't use VW PD approved oil in it the top end won't make it to 500 miles.

 

I used to work with race engines, we'd build 'em up, run the cam and lifters in for twenty on a fast idle then give it death on the dyno until the rings started sealing then get the figures, change the oil and ship it out.

 

I know of what I speak, you're following a ritual, this isn't magic, it's science.

I'll go with that as well, the crankshaft bearings are run in just by hand turning the engine during assembly, 20 minutes to break in the cams and then either full load dyno as above or repeated full acceleration runs up a long fast steep hill, Bury Hill in Sussex was my favorite because it had fast bends and an overtaking lane.

 

I think the crucial thing about running in is ring sealing and the quality of the bore honing has a great influence on that, breaking in under full load is essential.

 

If I rebuilt a road engine for myself I would use tighter piston to bore clearances than most engine reconditioners and if I had the time I would run it in gently for a few thousand miles in the old school way, it would not do any harm but I would definitely break in the cams & followers at a fast idle & do as many ring sealing full load runs on hills as presented themselves during the old school running in.

Running an engine in gently causes problems with bore glazing, diesels are better than petrols because they have far higher mean cylinder pressures due to the high compression ratio and turbo, this pressure forces the rings into the hone and beds 'em in quicker, but I assure you that on a dyno you can watch the figures rise as the rings start sealing then they level off once the seal is tight. The initial twenty minutes at fast idle warms the engine through properly, breaks in the cam and followers and shows up any leaks.

Remember that all the bearings are really bushes with the journal floating on a film of high pressure oil,  there is no metal to metal contact at all so there's nothing to run in.

Thankyou sepulchrave and JR for your input and i understand and hear everything your saying , i plan on the half hour cam break in procedure , thats a given once shes filled with coolant and ive made hard pipes to plumb my intercooler in, its just the longer bore break in is the way i was taught and  ive always done it that way, you can hear everything thats going on that way too , not that im going be driving like a sunday driver i aint planning of thrashing her an inch from her life ,,well for at least the first few thousands, then i would be rolling roaded to some nice numbers  with longevity in mind

That's why we give 'em death after twenty minutes, longevity, because if an engine is gonna let go it'll do it while it's strapped to a dyno instead of out on the road or the track, that's as good a guarantee as you can give because you can't control what the driver's going to do once it's left the shop.
