front end knock/rattle

Featured Replies

hi all.

I'm experiencing a very irritating front end knocking/rattle, from what sounds like my top mount area.

Seems to have been since I had my H&R springs fitted to be honest, but not 100% sure.

It's not something I can feel that is affected performance or safety, the steering is still sharp (for an octavia anyway ha) and nothing feels loose at all.

But it's like a plasticky pop/knock. When going over rough roads and especially when dropping down off a speed bump or similar.

Seems to have got more noticeable with the car being parked up for a while.

I'm suspecting top mounts, or someone mentioned a 'pinch bolt'? But on top mounts, what actually is at fault - the bearing is fine it seems as no unwanted noises on turning.

Thanks

Hi D, not trying to through a spanner in the works, but it could be coming from the back.

I had knocking on my Roomster, and was convinced it was coming from NSF, turned out to be NSR, worn bush. Noise transfer along the chassis.

Just a thought 💭

Ok cheers, which bushes?

It does sound like driver's side front behind dash but will try and eliminate the possibility of the rear! ta

Sorry cannot remember which bush it was now, it was on my previous car.

I even got my wife to drive the car while i sat in the passenger seat, that confirmed to me it was the FNS.

Took it to my local garage, he put it on the lift, checked it over and said its a bush at the rear. 😳

It's like the sound of the mixing ball in a paint rattle can. Was yours like that?

That sounds odd 🤔

Mine was a low down noise, like someone hitting underneath the car with a lump hammer every time I went over a bump.

Could yours be a nut or bolt rolling around?

I got the same sound from front passenger side after installing Eibach springs.  I haven't yet figured out where it comes from.

I watched an online top mount related video and asked him a couple of questions. He said it's common for the top nut to not be fully tight after spring fitting. Is this something I could attempt to tighten with the suspension on the car?

Hi D, did someone else fit the new springs?

If so, get intouch with them.

Yeah was a friend. Would go over to him but he's 40 miles away by my work. Also don't want him thinking I'm not grateful by querying his fitting!

But this could bug you for years.

If he's a friend he wont mind.

Just say you have a small problem and can he help, then explain what it is.

Sounds tinny, i would jack front end up and spin wheel, see if anything catching.

Great road by the way, just right for checking rattles 😳

It certainly is a good one for a road test!! It sounds like a bush that needs greasing up, but was wondering if it could be linked

Have you jacked it up yet?

Just to discount it.

not yet. Too lazy now, booking it in with my mate again to have a look while it goes in for a brake fluid flush and braided lines

Thats good to hear.

Brake fluid and braided lines, sounds like your getting serious. 😐

ha, no I just can't help myself. H|E|L had 25% off and I'm due a fluid change anyway. But I am pricing up an LSD :)

Sounds too tinny for bushes in my opinion, more like some bracket or trim (metal) or brake shields. All will be revealed when your friend re-examines....

Also, one other thought. Something that has caught me out twice on my MK2.  We have  gravel drive and twice large stones have got deposited on top of the suspension wishbones and rattled like made over bumps.

Good call it does sound like that to be honest
