Attaching sub/amp to stock HU

Featured Replies

Is there any point in me doing this? ive still got 2 amps from my younger days.. should i get them hooked up, or just sell them and get a new HU..

Are there any outputs on the stock HU? dont think there are.

As I have only had my vRS for a month or so now I haven't even taken it out of the dashboard. As I work in car audio all day long then this maybe of some use :

If the unit is the same on the rear as the units found in VW Golfs (Beta and Gamma type radios), and most of the Seat range, then the answer is yes you can connect an amplifier quite easily. Both Blaupunkt and Autoleads offer a yellow 'mini ISO' connector which is about 1cm square which plugs in the back of the headunit. This plug comes with a front and rear 'preout' connection (phono output) and an amplifier turn on wire.

If the Skoda units do not have this then you can still buy a 'high to low' convertor from car audio dealers. This works by taking a feed from the speaker leads and converting it to 'low level' phono outputs. Alternatively some amplifiers have this already built in and ready to use.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info... my clarion amp (see for sale section) has the high level inputs.. but ive decided to just save for a new HU, as this apparenlty makes a big difference to the sound quality.

cheap amp anyone? :D

Is there any point in me doing this?

Has been done, albeit briefly. If you look in the links section there should be a bit about DIY ICE which will have a link to a chap called Dean's website - this has a pin diagram of the back of the HU.

Using this, you can fashion together some connectors for the line out on the HU, and it sounds pretty good. However, the Symphony we were using did seem to exhibit pretty erratic line out voltages, which caused some "complications" with the amp. Don't know whether all Symphonys are like this or just mine, personally I'd just buy a new HU... :D
