Another tyre thread sorry...

Featured Replies

Morning all,

I know it’s done to death and I’ve been through various posts but can’t seem to find a concrete answer.

I have a FL vrs tdi 4x4. It currently has PZero tyres however 3 of them have become cracked and perished so need replacing. I’m not a huge fan of these tyres as they’re quite noisy.

Looking to replace them and the tyres I see recommended here a lot are the Goodyear Asymmetric, however mixed opinions on noise levels. The other tyre is the Uniroyal Rainsports, I’ve fitted these to previous cars and found them to be ok but they were on a much more forgiving tyre size so can’t really compare.

The question I’ve taken a long winded way of asking is, if anyone has fitted either of them in a similar size how you find/found them. Price wise there’s only a couple of ££ in it so that’s not a factor.

cheers

If you can stretch your budget either Michelin PS4 or the even better PS4S are excellent on wet or dry roads and last longer than the P Zeroes.

Unfortunately I can’t bring myself to pay the extra. I usually order through work and fit my own at work but because of the size of these our machine won’t do it so having to pay normal prices is bad enough already!

I'm running the Rainsport 5s, so far so good, very good infact.

Admittedly on a FWD Vrs though, so not sure what they would be like on 4WD.

As I said, I’ve run them on both my previous cars (but we’re a much bigger profile tyre size) and they’ve been a nice grippy tyre and last quite well.

Just having seen so many good things said about the Goodyear’s I wasn’t sure if I’d be better getting them while they’re on offer.

I had the Good Year Eagle Asymetric 3's on my previous 2wd VRS Tdi and loved them, got the Asymetric 5's on it and not so much tbh, steering was a lot slower and not as grippy at the front, got the 4x4 Tdi and it had Bridgestone Potenza's on from bew and not a fan of those either, got some new wheels and got a good deal on Michelin PS4's so put those on the new wheels, loving them so far, best I've had I would say.

Having been previously on Rainsport 3 and Goodyear prior to those (not the asymmetric though) these RS5s are much better than both.

If the deal is good then why not give them a whirl, you never know they might suit your driving style.

Thanks all, after all that I managed to find a deal for PS4's for not much more so went for 4 of those. Here's hoping they're as good as everyone eveywhere makes out!

Id have gone for the Asy 5s. Got them on my car and they are fantastic tyres. They also beat the PS4 in a recent tyre test and I can see why. They do everything the PS4 do but at a much lower cost. The PS4 are too expensive.

PS4S, worth the extra cost

Costco currently doing 4x 225 40 18 Michelin PS4 fitted for £287 on Hot Deals website, £33 membership at Costco if you qualify with the right job e.g. Local government NHS Police etc.

On my previous car (Audi RS4 quattro) I ran PZero Rosso (factory fit, awful tyre with little wet grip and short life 9000 miles), Goodyear Asymetric (good all rounder, good life 13000 miles), PS4S (easily the best grip and best life 18000 miles but loudest for road noise).

My choice of tyre for my O3? Goodyear Assymetric as it's not as performance orientated.

Personally, I wouldn't fit 'concrete' tyres, Lol.

If it wasn't for getting the PS4S's for a price so close to them I'd have probably gone with the Goodyears, as I agree the Michelins are usually too expensive.

They're getting fitted Saturday so only time will tell, as long as I actually have confidence driving in all conditions it will be a huge improvement. The Pirellis I currently have give me zero confidence when driving more enthusiastically.

Time to collect your coat before you close the door on your way out.

Ive been through most brands and although you might think the Michelins are expensive they will easily outlast all the others, Pzeros are trash for wear on everyday driving, maybe they are better on the track? I went through a set in less than 6 months. I've had Pilot Sports on now for 12 months and they look like new and perform better than anything else i've fitted. Goodyear eagles wore very quickly as well less than 9 months on the rears.

It all depends on how you drive the car. If you corner hard etc they won't last long. But 9 months on the rear? Was the car rear wheel drive or was the tracking out? Never had any tyre on all my performance cars go within 9 months. Even on my mk1 Focus RS they lasted well over 15 months even with track abuse and that was with Eagle F1s.

theres a known problem with tracking on all octavia III's and its worse on estates, rear inner tyre wear (saw toothing) is an issue particularly on octavias which i thought we were talking about.. ?

Apoligies I didnt see anyone mention the saw toothing issue 👍 The issue was also present on the mk2 although having owned 2 mk2 VRS ( hatch and estate ) and this mk3. Touch wood I haven't suffered with that issue.

I think it is very much down to tracking.

One of the weak points (especially about the steering system on the VRS) - is that it is very harsh on tyres.  The fact Bridgestones were terrible - and I went over to Michelins - which completely transformed the car (handling and wear).

I would say that if you aren't doing it already, that you need to get a wheel alignment done ASAP - which will help tyre wear.

I’ll be shot for saying this... but I’ve been using the Kormoran UHP on my scout for the last 6 months, and although there is a slight difference to a ‘premium’ tyre I’m really quite impressed. Not for ultra sporty use, but for every day commuting etc they are perfect.

Not at all Nick, it's good to hear views about lesser known brands.  Otherwise all we hear about is the top half a dozen or so.  A quick look shows they're a subsidiary of a very well known manufacturer, and the reviews they're getting are quite favourable.

Tyres all fitted, about a 15 mile journey home from the fitters in the rain and they already gave me more confidence than the old Pirelli’s. Now that’s not to say the Michelin’s are better than the other options but an improvement all the same. Also they’re much quieter.

One thing though, I ran my old tyres at the Eco pressure indicated on the fuel flap (3bar) but the garage put the new ones to the 2.7 setting.

Just out of curiosity, what does everyone else run theirs at? (225/35/19)

Yeah I run my Michelins at 2.7bar albeit they are 235/35R19. They wear evenly across the width of the tyre and economy excellent as well.
