What difference would that make as you trundle about the UK?

Do you get places quicker than when you drive the 150ps Karoq?

Motorway sliproads are more fun in the Superb.

Is that something that can be tweaked via vcds or a pedal box?

MrsG said similar about the size of the octy until she got used to it. I guess it'll be the same with a superb.

Not considering the diesel in any way. If I was I'd keep the octy. We live on the edge of town so I think I'll look at the 272/280. 4wd has gained my interest again. I figured if I can afford a nice car I should be able to afford the maintenance too so that will be the big final check.

The only thing to consider for a 280 over 220 is the small bits if additional servicing like haldex, bigger diameter tyres if sport line spec and bit more fuel consumption.

If you don't drive many miles, the difference is marginal in the grand scheme of things . Also, if driving like @shyVRS245 , fuel consumption is not a problem!

IMO without any trick front differential 4 x 4 is deffo needed when power is over 220bhp via front wheels. My previous S2 Superb 170 TDi Elegance would regularly spin the front wheels when joining a roundabout smartly from stopped. So much torque from even a stock engine - albeit a diesel. Damp weather just made it even worse. This was the reason when it came time to change the car & I no longer needed diesel economy I went for a used 280 Combi with DSG & 4 x 4 as standard. As hard as try I cannot make the wheels spin & it is so much more reassuring to drive in the dry or wet. The only drawback currently is I'm only getting an indicated 25mpg. I do use the sport mode quite a bit & all mileage now is local start stop traffic or none at all of late! I am currently debating whether to go stage 1 map which should add around 80hp. My only worry is what that will do to my insurance premium. What price for a bit of fun eh?

My stage 1 272 hatch went down in insurance compared to my previous car a stage 2 Vrs245 (336bhp). You might be surprised I paid just £265 with 12 years NCB and I'm 55 clean licence.:nerd:

When I had the MKII remapped to 225, it was a £25 additional premium with Esure. Whilst rip-off companies like Nash want to add ‘00’s, some of the mainstream insurers are pretty reasonable.

Insurance companies have never clobbered me too much for a basic map. It definitely wouldn’t put me off doing it.

Yes you can change the throttle response using VCDS. There's a setting somewhere that you change from 'Skoda' to 'Audi' (not joking) which makes it sharper.

I've left mine in Skoda mode.

If you can find the right  car, I'd get the 280. It seems to be what your heart says!

Humm. Interesting.

My current fully comp premium is £299 with Quote Me Happy, My NCD is forever (20yrs+), no convictions & a clean licence. I'm 63 & retired now so I'm not even commuting to a place of work any more. The car is on the drive every night, dash cam fitted & I certainly do not drive like I did in my youth in a car that shouted "please nick me"!! (but that's another story).

Just as matter of interest who did your stage 1 & 2 re-maps Shy?

I'm perhaps looking at REVO stg 1 because of their rep & because there is a VAG specialist who can do them near to where I live & who I will probably get to do servicing now my 280 is out of warranty. It's booked in for the 1st June for investigation of a fuel leak smell (see other thread on this) so I will enquire about the re-map when I drop it off. I know there are probably loads of threads on here arguing the pros & cons of re-maps vs Boxes & which suppliers are best so any thoughts or links to threads would be appreciated.

Always use Ben at AmD in Grays, Essex (near Ikea and Lakeside Shopping Centre). Their normal price is £500 but I'm a regular customer so I paid £450 on the Superb with a few rolling road runs and a laminated print out. One of the most notable improvements is that the maximum torque curve has moved from a maximum of 369nm at 4,500rpm to 514nm at 2,600rpm and you feel this as soon as you touch the throttle as it is now so urgent whereas as standard it could feel a bit dull at low revs. Really is chalk and cheese difference and fuel economy has improved by about 2mpg as a nice bonus. If I was in Germany I think it could top 170mph and get there pretty quickly as well. Very pleased with their work as usual and several other members have had their cars tuned there as well.

It’s a massive increase in the torque - is this on the standard DSG?

Wow! So has the limiter, which I presume is software, been removed by the remap too?

My only regret is not buying a 280 3-4 years ago and spending the money I wasted on the Vrs245 because I could now be driving a stage 2 400bhp Superb with 4WD.

Same regrets for me... I signed the purchase order and had to chose a car being manufactured (to get it quickly with a good bargain). I was hesitating between TDI190 for the budget and TSI280 for the pleasure. No TSI280 being manufactured at this time. I took the TDI190.

Though ~ +35% on power compared to my ex-Superb MK2 TDI140, this is sometime not enough. Hmmm... If I had 280HP, I would probably say the same thing after few months... 😁 (One of my friend went from a Ford Focus 3 ST 250HP to a Ford Focus 3 RS 350HP. I'm wondering what he'll buy as a next car... 😈)

The DSG has not been mapped for quicker changes but was available for an extra £300 I think. Most tuners think it is probably safe upto 600nm. Yes the factory limiter set at 155mph has been removed. My stage 2 Octavia hit an indicated 177mph at 5,900rpm with the smaller IS20 turbo.

Holy F%#k!! 177 in an Octavia?! 😳
Thats good news the DSG doesn’t need to be mechanically messed with to handle the increased oomph.
What on earth is the 0-60 time on the Superb now? Have you changed anything on the car to handle the increased speed and torque?

Just spent 2 hours polishing it so that should help with fuel economy and acceleration. Chap on here called Roscio based in Italy has done some acceleration tests on his stage 1 272 and the results were as follows.

Standard 0-60mph 5.5 seconds, stage 1 4.3 seconds.

Standard 0-100mph 12.5 seconds, stage 1 10.46 seconds.

Quarter mile at 110mph in 12.52 seconds.

Most impressive are these from a standing start for the stage 1 map.

0-30mph 1.7 seconds.

0-40mph 2.5 seconds.

0-50mph 3.2 seconds.

0-70mph 5.5 seconds.

0-87mph 8.1 seconds.

All I’ve been doing in the past week is detailing the car!
Yep, they are very impressive. Think I’ll wait til the warranty expires next year and a remap will be in order. What else is done for Stage 1, Shy?

Only 2 things required 99 octane fuel Shell V-Power Nitro or Tesco Momentum (I've used both and Tesco is cheaper) plus the ECU remap which raises the boost typically from 1.4bar factory setting to around 2bar at stage 1 and 2.3-2.6bar at stage 2 depending on how aggressive you want the map. Mine is good for reliability and drivability. Stage 2 can cost an extra £3,000 with full exhaust, downpipe, air intake and intercooler upgrades resulting in around 415bhp with this engine.

Thanks Shy for all your posts. So just fuel and the remap? Excellent!
I have been toying with the idea of a plug-in unit, for the ability to change the profiles and to be able to remove it, but the very well respected ones like ABT are around £1,500 so it looks like a remap is still the way to go.

If you can't get 99 octane anything from 95 upwards is ok because the ECU works out how good the fuel is and automatically adjusts everything but you will obviously get normal power levels until you put some good stuff in the tank. Higher octane prevents pinking when the engine is under load as well so avoiding any engine damage through internal unwanted fuel detonation.

With a 280, there is a lot more room to upgrade still. Now if one buys an AMG E63s...  And still want more power, it's bit more difficult.

One of my neighbours has just upgraded his C43 to a C63S convertible with an epic exhaust burble.

Every time you hear a V8 Mercedes it's so distinctive it's just a case of which model before you actually see it. Best sounding engines in the last decade IMHO.

BMW V12 6.1 litres in the McLaren F1. I was at Donington Park and some lucky folk were being given passenger rides by Derek Bell and he told the reporter that he was hitting 174mph on the back straight where I was standing and that engine at full chat is one of those moments I will never forget. Spine tingling.
