Fabia II 1.4 TDI converting to EV

Featured Replies

My Fabia II !.4TDI PD 69 PS  TMBBEC5J28A501863 ENGINE  damaged due to broken oil chain and repairing is too expensive. So I am planing to converting to electric car, I wanted to use maximum  parts and electronics of car,

So give valuable suggestions

@Som  Welcome to the forum.  You have posted in the Fabia Mk1 section.

Sounds like a great project,

but surely fitting another diesel engine would cost less than converting to being an electric car.

Lots of examples of VW having a conversion like that done on youtube.

There are websites where there will be those that have experience of doing conversions.

People's builds being done with the gearbox connected to the gearbox.

?

What electric motor and battery pack are you intending to use?

This guy has a whole series of videos showing how to.

I want to integrate electronic and control system of fabia, with electric motor control system and it's accessories

eg: 1),fuel gauge can be used for battery charge, 2) accelerator pedal can be used for signal generator of  electric motor or chopper circuit , for  same in depth knowledge needed in car electronics and wiring

Thanking you

If you don't already have a good working knowledge of electrics/electronics, doing a DIY EV conversion is probably not a good idea.

I have  knowledge about working of electrical motor and electronics of drive system and power pack system but not much idea about Skoda fabia electronics and it's communication system. Such as canbus and it's electric connection

Thanks

New electric motor cost is more than USD 1000, but for less than $ 500 , 60kw used and refebricted  motor is available in eBay.uk

Cost of used and working TDI engine will cost more than $1200

Battery pack I am going to make with  lithium titanate cells and  I will make chopper circuits for motor and assembled BMS circuit board is available in robokit market for less tha usd 5

So I wanted  to integrate to can bus system of car and nullifies is the error messages from ecm,

Hope someone have this knowledge for integration

Thank you

This quite an undertaking!

I am reminded (by your intention to make chopper circuits) of very dated technology such as controllers made by EVP, and the later Cableform Mk 10 boards.

A chopper circuit system would require a pulse generator / on/off thyristers / commutation capacitors / Motor diode protection. Also a foot control suitably calibrated to suit the low and high on/off charactoristics of the circuit. I am a little behind the times now, BUT, a conventional chopper system was usually joined with lead acid battery as power source.

In the past vehicles had 24v - up to 80v supplies, ranging from 200A/h (at the 5 hour rate) up to 500a/h (at the 5 hour rate) This related to road mileage was 15 to 30 miles max. Costs today would be prohibitive. Overall vehicle control would not meet an acceptable standard.

To buy ready assembled components would introduce a greater safety element. Without being over negative - is such an expense justified on a fabia? In addition to the foregoing, there is the matter of transmission - again a potentially expensive move.

I will look with interest at the post unearthed by George (earlier post).

PS - recently tried a new Nissan Leaf, and was quite impressed by its performance

yes please! i'll be following this as I have something similar planned

It'll end up costing mega ££££ more than the cost of a replacement engine.

Cannot see it being viable, look at what he spent on that passat 😲

Probably all people said the project could be expensive have reason but I think it´ll be a good project. Som, today are available many kits that fit in all budgets, anyway the idea to use current electronics may be a lot of challenging ... I would like to do some similar with my Fabia and convert to EV keeping many features from Skoda's engineering ... good luck and let us know if you´ll do it!

people don't slap bigger turbos, intercoolers 2.0 engines because it's economically viable :D project innit

The batteries and motors are getting more readily available in the UK and there are kits to assist with the conversions.

But to have enough space for batteries to give the car any decent amount of range and to have a car with the suspension and brakes i would want, it would not be a Fabia that would be getting the conversion doing to it.
