Adding USB ports in armrest?

Awesome thanks, I was hoping it was a normal push in 12v rather than remove the existing.

I’ll see if any push in ones work with spacing first.

just to confirm as well, i’ll need to remove the rear ash tray and rear vents or the whole surround which has the clock/temps?

thanks

The push in version which goes into the existing 12v socket will sit too high.

Hence why I replaced the existing 12v socket with the USB socket.

If u want to simply convert the socket, then yes it does require u to remove the bottom compartment/console/ashtray.

If u want to run a USB cable from it to the inside of ur armrest centre console, then yes u need to remove the surround, air vents and controls.

Evening all,

Quick question about you wireless adapter @JR RS if I may, i was under the impression these needed to be connected to the data port for android auto, have i got this wrong, is it just power thats required?

Been looking at getting one and if the one your using is power only would make life alot easier for me 😀.

The AAWireless adaptor needs to b connected to the car's USB data port.

Power only port will simply just power the dongle and have no connection to the car's headunit for Android Auto or CarPlay.

I realise I am jumping onto an old thread here. If you only need one port to be data then theres posisibly a couple of options.

I wonder if its possible to depin the front original USB port connector and leave just the power, then extend the data cables through to the armrest and piggyback power from the rear cigarette lighter (Or run new power) to effectively make the front USB power only and the armrest USB the data one? Or is that not how USB cables work?

Equally could you effectively dismantle the existing port and just hide it away somewhere and plug a male to female cable in to it that, and reroute this cable to the arm rest, then replace the existing port in its normal position with one just connected to a power supply.

or even if you can get a neat enough cable, just plug one in to the port but then route the other end of the cable to the arm rest.

I am thinking of doing the USB port in the arm rest.

Would only want power, would use Wireless airplay dongle at the front and just keep the ashtray shut.

In using the 5G0035222E, this is the unit that fits the blanking plate under the arm rest?

Do you use the USB Hub as a splitter so true feed that currently connects to the front usb port in the ash tray would then feed the hub with then the 2 outports going to the usb A ports? Is that correct?

I managed to find a plug in usb charger and cable combo that means you can use the rear cigarette lighter and route cable through without having to hardwire anything based on JR RS’s solution. All from AliExpress

Wireless CarPlay adapter:

USB charger

https://a.aliexpress.com/_EJxMn5K

USB cable (they do usb c or lightning version)

https://a.aliexpress.com/_EI3QUyc

The wireless dongle was a bit clunky to set up put works really well considering the price. Touchscreen is smooth and responsive, Slight delay in audio when you make changes but is only noticeable when skipping or changing track. It’s small enough to allow you to have the sliding door closed over the top. And connects automatically within a few seconds each time you get in the car.

For the rear charger you can still open and close the ashtray with it all in situ. If you take the ashtray out you can follow the existing cables and there are holes under the felt in the armrest for the cable to come out of. The shape of the cable also allows rear seat passengers to still use the usb A port on the charger too. And you can open and close the ashtray with it all in situ.

If u only want power, u don't need to use the USB hub splitter.

U just need a USB port that fits in the blank dummy spot and source the 12V power from somewhere.

The USB hub splitter is too much effort for just power.

If u want data and power, then yes, u need the hub.

Just found this. I wonder if it could be mounted into the back/front/side/bottom inside the armrest and then piggy backed into power supply for cigarette lighter in rear as others have done.

Depends on the availability of space/depth outside of the unit.

The single USB socket plate and USB has arrived today, its a Skoda unit so is a Skoda direct replacement for the blanking plate but only the a single USB port.

The unit came with a tail from the round 4 pin connector, but I have removed the USB unit from the mounting plate, will then mount in the Single usb with in line power adaptor and should be golden.

Will post pictures when the rest comes etc

Does anyone know if the Red and Black cables in the round cable above is all you need for just powering/charging USB.

It has Green and Blue as well but only wanting to charge, the Amazon usb in line adaptor USB QC arrived to do but the end's not the same and so doesn't connect

I’ll see if I can find the wiring diagram.

Looks like black is ground, red is +ve, blue is data +ve and green data -ve. So just red ad black needed for power.

Thanks for that, right out comes the soldering iron then

Where are you connecting the red +ve to? Bear in mind it looks from this like the power is already stepped down to 5v, so dont connect it directly to a 12v supply otherwise you will blow up anything USB you plug into it....

I was going to take a feed off the USB socket I have in the rear cig lighter that I replaced using the car's fuse etc

I think that will be 12v thats on that red lead, and the USB socket adaptor itself steps it down to the 5v for the sockets. For the OEM USB sockets they are fed with 5v from the hub from what I can make out.

I think you will need something like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Q-BAIHE-Quallity-Vehicle-Converter-Plastic/dp/B07Z1CXK82

between the 12v feed and the USB socket you have.

Yes that looks to be equivalent to my untrained eye!

Thanks, ordered

Been able to this today, thanks to @Binx1310 about the wiring etc.

Able to use the tail from the socket I picked up off ebay and use the step down to connect to this and then the other end to USB socket that I had installed last year.

Just had to route it in the car but wasn't too bad using a bit of cable to route from the back of the ash tray up to the inner of the arm rest.

What the unit looks like with it all connected, USB socket, step down and connection to the car.

That looks really neat.

I would do something similar but don’t have the blank in the armrest to install it.

Will stick with what I’ve got for now.

Thanks, so you don't have that area at all in yours then?

Do you only need to remove the ashtray or the vents as well?
