Adding USB ports in armrest?

Do you only need to remove the ashtray or the vents as well?

Only removed the ash tray and then used a brake cable outer off a bike to help route it, a little fiddly but got there.

  • A while ago I researched into this - adding additional USB ports inside the under armrest storage as there is already a blanking plate there for the USB port holder. But I ended up passing as it

  • this shows the install in the Superb under the armrest, and the power connection at the rear power outlet.

Ohh that sounds promising, I have a habit of breaking things so removing as little as possible is best for me.

Did you buy the 2m usb c cable?

Also how do you remove the ashtray?

Think I’ll be following your way as looks best for me

I haven't bought a 2m USB C cable for this, just using the shorter one that I use at the front ash tray.

You open the ash tray as normal and then at the top push in (does take a little force) and it drops down and some out from the bottom, the right side pops upwards at the bottom with the left side retains so when putting back put the left side in first.

Excellent thank you, I assume a 1m cable like you linked will do?

Yes does seem to, only for charging anyway

Fitted this today with what @tombee bought

I gave up trying to route the cable with just the ashtray out so I removed the inner “cage” then easy peasy, but that wasn’t exactly easy to remove the inner cage but bit of persuasion and jobs a goodun

Looks good. A nice neat solution. Really pleased with mine.

Although I’m now thinking about adding a MagSafe wireless charger to the front slot. And wiring in using 12v to 5v usbc adaptor hard wired in. Can get all the bits for about £15. Just deciding if it’s worth it.

Sorry @Binx1310 it was you who said to get those my bad, thank you very much for recommending it.

I found my phone just a bit too big for the front and a pain but armrest is perfect for me

I was contemplating having a wireless charger power bank in the arm rest then some plastic covering the edges so the phone didn’t move, but the usb cable sooo much better

Keep an eye on this @Danoid I’ve worked out today that these usb adaptors (or possibly the cables) are the source of my DAB interference meaning the radio drops out when charging phone. I’ve used a different charger and wire with no issue.

Oh will keep an eye, tbh I rarely use DAB.

I rarely do too, but it annoyed me that it wasnt working! New adaptors arriving today to try a different one.

Probably doesnt help that I have 2 of these installed!

I got these ones and DAB now working!

Not quite as slimline as the others but they JUST fit under the front sliding cover and ashtray can close.

Same cable?

Yes. They are borderline too big but just about closes. Have to press on the top of the plug slightly to close the rear ashtray. I might end up changing them for surface mount sockets, but they work for now!

I added a MagSafe wireless charger from the front socket. Works really well.

I gave up with the armrest solution. I got sick of leaving the phone in the car.

Yeah i can understand that. I used to plug phone in then leave it on passenger seat so I didn’t generally forget it. I wanted something quick and easy but mostly out of sight as I don’t like phone mounts like that as I get distracted by the phone. Where mine is on the side of the tunnel it’s easy to get to but sufficiently away from me so as to not be distracting.

I do like your idea. Does the phone stay solid on the charger? iPhone? Or Android?

Yes very sturdy. And it’s far a bough forward not to be in the way of passenger knees.

iPhone 12 With a MagSafe compatible case.

I haven’t been on a long journey with it yet but I’m hoping being out in the open it shouldn’t heat up too much. And I’ve always got the wire in armrest to fall back on if needed.

How did you attach it?

The charger is self adhesive. It’s got strong 3M pad on the back.

The side panel comes off with one screw under a cap and for the routing of the cable I just had to notch out the panel under the cigarette lighter a little bit with a dremmel. It could be hardwired with a 12v to usb C converter but I wanted to make it work with minimal changes as I wasn’t sure it would work.
