I have a Karoq with 1.5TSI petrol engine. Have had 3 different recommendations for oil: Dealer 1 = 0W - 20, Dealer 2 + 5W - 30, SKODA via their Chat line  = 5W - 40!! Which is correct please? (no, not Duckhams 20-50, those were the days!)

STOP!

Ask the chatter, who & where they are and do they know their back end from their elbow.

So if your cars recommended oil for Variable Flexible servicing and the car left the factory with VW 508/509  that is 0w 20 FS IV. (Long Life)

You could use 5w 30 FS III at the next service.  (Long Life)  That is VW504/507

(Fixed Servicing could have VW502 used, so 5w 40 FS.)

http://volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/regimes

Maybe if you own the car and are keeping it for years and doing low annual mileages and changing the oil annually,

or you could stick using Long Life oil.  0w 20 FS IV or the 5w 30 FS III.

This below is for Variable / Flexible Servicing of TSI's since before the WLTP Approval.

The bit at the bottom is because VW Group started using VW508/509 before WLTP Testing and approval. so 0w 20 FS IV

My 2.0TSI needs the 0W-20 VW508.00 oil as stated above - though I'd prefer the owner's manual to tell me this rather than refer me to a dealer!

So as I like to keep a litre bottle in the boot, especially with a new engine that's likely to need top ups for its first thousand miles or so, I went off to Halfords to find some. There's a Mobil 1 oil that meets the specs, and I thought Halfords were selling it for £16.80, but it turned out not to be the right one. So I called in at my local VW dealer (Skoda's are further away) to find they had a Shell Helix VW508.00 oil at just £16 for the litre!

Chris

Both are ridiculous prices to pay for a litre of VW 508 00 / 509 00 so 0w 20 FS IV.

That seems to be what people are going to be paying if sticking with VW508 00 & not just going to use VW504 00, so 5w 30 FS III

Sure, but the new generation 2.0TSI is designed to use that oil and not the more viscous ones. And to think Duckhams 20/50 used to be the Go-to oil!

Chris

@CJJE So VW Group / Skoda have VW508 00 as the recommended oil for Variable / Flexible service intervals.

?

What are the recommending for 'Fixed Interval' servicing for those that do not want Long Life oil used, given that you can use Long Life for fixed or variable.

There are main Dealerships servicing Euro 6d TSI's and using 0w 30 Full Synthetic for Variable Service Intervals & which is not to VW 508 00

I've read somewhere that the DKZA engine requires VW508.00 oil, but can't track it down now. This is one of the changes from the earlier 2.0TSI engines, and is of course common across all VAG cars with that engine.

Certainly the Castrol Oil Finder at Skoda Karoq, NU7 (2017- ) Karoq 2.0 TSI (140 kW) 4x4 | CASTROL ENGINE OIL AND FLUID RECOMMENDATION

recommends this oil for my car with no suggestion that it's only needed for variable servicing.

I also took the view that it would have been set up in the factory for variable servicing (even though I've had mine switched to fixed term) so it would be better not to mix it with a different oil.

Chris

Did I read somewhere that the adoption of VW508.00 oil was prompted by emission control compliance?

Pre WLTP / RDE certification all in the factory got VW508 00 / 509 00.

Just like Toyota did back with Euro 5 coming in when they went 0w 30 instead of 5w 30 because the customers were saying the MPG had increased.

So use the oil that will allow lower emissions under the test regime, and if the test is replicated on random cars imported into EU countries.

Like VW Group cars into the UK, which happened from early 2016, because VW are cheats.

So if the VW508 00 is a must so be it.  But VW502 , 5w 40 FS can be used for Fixed Servicing.   Like using VW504 instead of VW508 the Emissions might be affected.

But then maybe your TSI will last more decades than with the Oil VW Recommend because of the viscosity.

When have VW cared about cars after the warranty has expired.

Could you elaborate why a higher viscosity oil will result in longevity of the engine?

@fidelio Sorry not really as it might not and the 1.5 TSI & 1.0 TSI's might live on for ever with VW Group Recommended Long Life OIls.

Or maybe many will go the way of some Euro 5 TSI's and have a not long life of Long Life Oil and Long Service Intervals between Oil & Filter changes.

Make your own decisions and do what you want, and maybe trust the VW group, after all they are truthful and honest and always put the customers first.

I have just had my 2020 Karoq 1.5TSI SE-L into the main dealer for its first service. On return the invoice stated that it had received 0w 30 fully synthetic oil. I queried this with the dealer who said that very recently Skoda had recommended 0w 30 in place of the previously specced 5w 30 for cars on fixed service intervals. I'm fine by that but has anyone else heard similar?

We know this for sure, because they have proven it to be true time and again over the years!  :mmm:

?I have not had to top up oil on any of my 7 Skoda since new since 2000?

They all happily went from new to first service without needing it and then on again without need to top up for time I had them. I was a 18k a year driver as well on long service interval

My MY2019 1.5tsi came supplied with a 1L bottle of Shell Helix Ultra Professional 0W-30 AV-L   VW 504.00/507.00 - in a neat plastic pouch. The car is on annual servicing, doing around 8-10k miles per annum.

I am assuming that the dealer has provided the correct grade of oil for any top-ups (???).

So far, after 3 years of use in covidious times (20k miles) , I have not had to break open the oil bottle ........ though I note that the bottle says

"Shelf life: 4 years from the date of manufacture if kept covered, stored in a dry place and protected from heat."

They supplied an oil that can be used but not what was in the engine when delivered from the factory that was VW 508 00 / 509 00  so 0w 20 FS IV.

Hi,

It is all about HTHS, just after the waranty ends I will change the oil from the vw long life iv fe 0w20(c5 with 2.7 hths) to vw long life iii fe 0w30 (c3 with 3.5 hths).

I don't care if my car will get 0.5L more fuel, the engine will last more than 10 years. It is all about WLTP and marketing :)

hope i am not too late for this discussion. I come from a very warm country. average daily temperature is easily above 30 celcius and drive in a fair amount of city traffic not stand still jams though.

should i be using something thicker?

Ask at the Dealership.

You should be using the recommended oil for your country, and that appears to still be VW508 00 / 508 00, so 0w 20 FS IV.

The alternative might be 0w 20 FS III which is VW504 00.   But not the Oil recommended for your engine now.

for all engines DADA or DPCA, you can also use 0w30-long life 3. see attached picture.
