New Key fob battery replacement not working?

Featured Replies

The spare keyfob battery is also around 3.0v and showing as needing replaced.  I'm sure it would work in the fob I use every day, but it would not resolve the issue.

You're right, it wouldn't resolve the issue, but it would 99% confirm if that new battery you tried was a dud.

I get all my small appliance batteries from watchbattery.co.uk and when I needed to replace the battery in my Octavia fob a battery from them worked fine with no problems - still working a year later.

Hey guys, so TLDR, Yup!!  This was a bad battery!      Was at work this moring and found a JCB branded cheapo CR2025 battery to try in the fob, Voltage read as 3.31v  no load and no warning on the dash to say low battery anymore.  I will try to get some better branded cells when I go to the shops this evening.  Still flabergasted that a new Duracell battery that reads as 3.27v under no load can be dead under load.  That's nuts!!

Perhaps these may explain...

Thanks Scot5, I'll have a look at those two vids shortly.  You can say "I told you so"  if you like!!  LOL!!

You can borrow my Dunce cap but you'll have to return it as I have to wear it at least once a week. :D

Don’t be certain is was a duff Duracell. Plenty of online marketplace sellers sell knock off batteries of major brands.

I had a set of “Panasonic” batteries that looked to be very cheap, first one worked for a short while rest were dead.

On closer inspection the printing on the packet seemed a tiny bit blurred, so I assumed they’re fakes and they got binned.

There are a lot of poor quality batteries that are branded with a big brand logo and flogged as the genuine article when they are not.

After getting around to finally opening my fob and having the requisite 2025 battery replacement ready, it turns out that I actually need a 2032!

LOL!! I know exactly where you are coming from my friend.  I work in IT too 😉  Sorry it's been a while since I replied.  Do you remember I said the car was going in for is MOT and a service.  Ummm, it failed for the disks and  pads being too heavily scored, so I had to replace those, and the windscreen wipers.  So with that work done and the service and MOT cost as well, I'm £700 down, BOOO!!  I was thinking of changing the car soon, but having forked out £700 on it, I'll be keeping it a bit longer now LOL!!

Bummer!! They must have changed the cell to a 2032 for a longer life span.

The batteries I was using were both supplied in the same twin pack though, genuine Duracell packaging.   1 lasted a year, the other seemingly DOA.  Weird!!

2025 and 2032 are identical in circumference and voltage, only difference is 2032 is 0.7mm thicker than the 2025.

Either will do, arguably the 2032 will fit in tighter due to extra thickness.

0.7mm is quite a big percentage of the overall thickness and I suppose the argument could be turned around to saying the 2025 will fit in too loose!
I’ll just have to put off buying another car until I’ve got full use out of the new battery. :D

Just a quickie as I ordered the same batteries for mine but couldn't get it to work.

I discovered a small U shaped sticker underneath the main sticker which I forgot to peel off before I put it in they keys.

Took me about 10 minutes to figure it out. D'oh!!!

Having said that, I replaced the batteries about 2 weeks ago and I got a message flash up on the dash saying low battery in key.

Not sure why it's causing that though. I'm using the 'spare key' so might switch back to the one I always used now that the battery was changed in both and see what happens.

New pack of batteries coming my way though just in case lol!!

Where did you get the batteries from? The remotes in our cars seem to be very sensitive to the condition of the batteries, it seems only fresh new batteries of reputable manufacture have a sensible lifetime in the remotes.

Who would have thought changing batteries in a remote could cause so many problems :)

I got the "Please replace battery" message on the dash yesterday. Ordered a pack of 2 Duracell 2025's from Amazon which should be here today.

Really am hoping it's one in, one out - job done.

Just done mine with no issues. Open case. Take out old battery, put in new, close case. Went to car and it opened fine.

Dont panic too much.

The battery voltage needs to be tested under load, I bet the voltage drops right off.

Only buy these batteries from places with a high turn over as it could be old stock. The workshop manual even says to test with a decade resistor box connected across the battery.

Also make sure it is actually a CR2025,  which you do have in this case, but I had someone where the shop gave him the batteries, turned out although asking for 2025 he was given CR2015 which fitted and worked for a week, but then failed. It was half the thickness and obviously much less capacity from required spec.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I've just encountered this issue. Warning on maxi dot telling me to replace fob battery. Bought a brand new pack of 4x2025 duracells from my local tescos for £8. Opened fob, took old battery out, put brand new duracell battery in, closed fob up. Nothing.

Took that one out, put old one back in. Working. Weird I thought, let me try another new battery from the same pack of 4. Next new one in, nothing, same issue.

Tldr:

The problem was a sticker on the back of the physical battery warning people not to swallow or let children play with it. Took sticker off and hey presto, working battery.

Just thought I'd save someone the hassle of thinking they've bought dud duracell batteries.

Bit of a silly thing to do though put a sticker on the back of the battery. I'm all for putting warnings on packaging etc but not the actual battery itself. Bit of a daft thing to do in my opinion.

Thanks to whoever suggested removing the battery sticker (doh!!) - this worked for me.
My local Skoda dealer service department could only suggest that they had superior batteries that they could fit and that "many customers find that their new batteries don't work, but one fitted by us does.  That will be £6 per battery if you would like to pop by" !  Even when I protested that a brand new duracell extra-life battery recently bought from a busy supermarket was highly unlikely to be worse than one supplied by Skoda they just repeated the line again that they had access to superior batteries!  I'm glad I came here and found a simple solution that didn't involve me exchanging my absolutely fine (albeit stickered) battery for a Skoda supplied one at three or more times the price!

You're in good company SD - lots of us enjoy peeling stickers off after inserting the battery.  It's good practice!

I think they now put stickers on to stop swallowed batteries burning a hole in the oesophagus re recent tragic incidents with children.
As long as you stick to a named brand from a shop with a high turn over, you can buy them where you like. The factory supply mostly Panasonic button cells.
So to avoid disappointment, steer clear of no name cells from a pack which has an inch of dust sitting on it from a flea market 😉

Also ensure you fit it the correct way up they only work one way round, there is a plus symbol moulded on the fob, but just try flipping it over if the LED (if fitted) doesn’t light up.

Thanks Harley. I was in despair. Ploughed through many, many posts with well meaning solutions till I read your one and realised my new Duracell battery had a small red sticker on one side which warned about children swallowing it. Took the sticker off and fob works perfectly! Many thanks.

Thought I shouldnt be so lazy, and should try to help someone else instead of always asking for help.

My [WEIRD] experience with Octavia 2014 VRs key fob not working. And PAY ATTENTION :)

Key not working [remote buttons]. No light when pushing buttons. Car recognises key and tells me to replace battery.

I changed battery. No effect. Tried another battery, no effect. Swapped working battery from other Fob to no effect. Conclusion.... key electronics dead.

Left last battery in Fob for 5-10 minutes while googling my fate, researching relearning key by unlocking door blah blah. Picked Fob up and pushed button .....BOOM..... light working.

Went to car, remote buttons didn't do anything. Relearned key by appropriate method, and YAY.... 2 working keys?...... go figure

Point is...how many people are ripping batteries in and out and saying that its crap batteries.....this battery definitely didn't work when I first tried it. All batteries I tried I pushed the remote buttons multiple times to no avail.

Hopefully this helps someone

ACTUALLY.....after research using AI.....it could be [and this happened] the fact that I left no battery in the FOB for 10 minutes or so. Apparently residual charge can affect electronics. I may not have tried that battery immediately after sticking it back in, as I had tried all the batteries previously!
