Crap fuel economy

Featured Replies

Another poor run. 😉

Thanks AG Falco

Ha Ha, shocking - but if you take this at face value, with a current computed range of 510miles and an average MPG over the last 1 mile, then hopefully you only put roughly 5 gallons into the tank, or it now has a total of roughly 5 gallons.

Remember to release the handbrake and use top gear next time. 😉

I'm sure I paid for the extra large fuel tank option.

Is that how I get my average speed up?

Thanks AG Falco

That's where I have been going wrong ;)

Reminds me of a story from the past: Woman complained of low MPG on her mini but garage could not find anthing wrong and so sent a mechanic to ride with her in the car. She pulled out the choke knob hung her hand bag on it and drove off...... Now of course if you really want good fuel usage you have to have some good driving habits. E.g. Unless I am in a serious hurry I never do more than 60 (like the commercials) because wind resistance rises exponentially above that speed unless the car is built like an aircraft which most are not. That wind resistance requires more and more fuel to maintain the speed.

Ending up with "accidental" good fuel economy can be almost addictive - my wife got bored/annoyed with me getting excited about passing the 66MPG figure over a 20 mile journey average.

Someone at work was complaining at the 25 MPG he was getting.

I said I would struggle get twice that with my car and he didn't believe me.

I then said I could do better. He bet me I couldn't.

And so it went on, Challenge set.  😁

Thanks AG Falco

Or the two American tourist ladies who rented a mini, they complained of low mpg, they had toured Cornwall

in second gear thinking the car was an automatic.

I averaged 42mpg Bristol to S.Devon via M5 eco tyre pressures, motorway speeds

And it decreases (or increases) exponentially under that speed as well, its not a cut off point.

And its the same for aircraft or cars built like aircraft, they are subject to the same laws of physics.

I agree that 60mph is a reasonable compromise between speed and fuel economy, more to be lost by going faster than to be gained slowing down but that is true at all speeds.

The Americans settled on 55 mph for best fuel economy

You must be driving a diesel.

Only those that cannot think for themselves.

So you are probably correct :D

Holland hast introduced a 100km/h limit between 6am and 7pm.

The main goal is to reduced co2 emissions in the country. If you think of all the cars driving on the motorways all saving several MPG (or fewer l/100km as it's measured there).

No, 1.2 TSI petrol, as noted under my avatar.

My other diesel car is even better on fuel economy.😁😁

How is it possible t get 130 mpg? I have a 75ps MPI and can barely get past 67 mpg. I'm guessing you were driving downhill or parked at idle.

Uses a lot of fuel as you are doing no miles and still using fuel.

The first post has the clues in it for the MPG achieved.

When I first stoped to take a photo of the MPG the figure was much higher.

But the stop/start didn't kick in so it went down.

Thanks, AG Falco

It was a 1 mile 3 minute journey. So not a real indication of fuel economy.

I'm not convinced that @AGFalco was being completely serious about this by the way,  I took the first posting to be a fact and a bit of fun - at the same time.

55 years ago had a 250cc 2 stroke scooter. Escorting another rider from north Wales to Surrey at about 30mph it did 130 mpg. Refuelled at 130 miles and it wouldn't quite take a gallon!

About a month later I did a somewhat more spirited ride and after 26 miles the tank was dry.

Not many will have a ratio of 10 to 1 mpg with the same machine?

I got this after a 50 mile mixed roads journey. Part A roads, part motorway.

If you fill the extra large fuel tank next time you will be going faster than 23mph downhill and complete the journey quicker and therefore use less fuel in theory. Let us know if this advice was helpful? 100 Posts to go yippee.:)

Ok, should only be a few minutes, knowing you. 😁
