Headlight swap: help needed with Vcds coding

Featured Replies

Hi there!

I’m in the middle of a front end modification of my Octavia Vrs mk2. It’s the facelifted version and I’ve modified the front end to the pre-facelift version. All seemed ok till I reached the headlight connecting and coding. Both headlights are Xenon but the car lighting configuration (coding) is made for the facelift version: led Drl, auto-switch on lights and foglight used as cornering.

Reached to this point, I would love to get any help so I can disable the Drls, the auto switch-on and the cornering via VCDS. That way, I would get the corresponding headlight configuration For a pre-facelift Vrs. Thanks so much in advance for any tip!

Might be worth posting an autoscan from vcds so we can see what state your car is in?

Definitely! That sounds a smart thing to do, didnt think about it. Although, Im taking the car to a pro workshop as I need the headlight harness converted from 14pin (original facelift headlights) to 10 pin (newly installed 2006 headlights). Should I do the scan before or after the transformation? Thanks a lot

If you have a scan, feel free to post it. Definitely get one afterwards messing with the wiring too!

You'll need to do something about the xenon levelling system. The FL has slave controllers on the headlights that communicate via CAN to the master controller. A pre-FL doesn't have the extra CAN controllers in the headlights. at least if I remember correctly! You'll probably need to check a pre-FL wiring diagram and replace the level controller and possibly the level sensors too.

It's worth thinking about before you start messing with the wiring. The low/dipped headlight, high/main beam and indicators will be pretty obvious but whatever wiring the headlight range adjustment needs won't be. There also won't be a wire for the sidelights/parking lights are they are not fitted on the vRS.

Finally, you might even need VCP or ODIS-e to tweak the lighting config as it'll currently expect the LED DRL/sidelights which will no longer fitted.

Wow!! That’s a handful of info haha.. feeling a bit overwhelmed, may be I should have done a xenon-halogen conversion (kidding)

I supposed that the leveling system and sensors will be a big issue. But, is there the chance to disable the system and just adjust the beam in a fixed position so I wont blind opposite cars (and by the way, pass the technical inspection)??

About the DRL, is It what you mean that I will need to disable them via VCDS? Odis-e sounds unknown to me, is that a similar software?

Thanks again Langers2k, you are being so helpful!

Just curious, why are you doing fl to pre fl conversion? The fl xenon headlights are amazing compared to pre fl

I was wondering the same. The FL has the full AFS II xenons as standard, correct?

With cornering function etc.

Seems like a big downgrade.

This is why I'm curious. The styling of the fl front end is also far better than the pre fl in my opinion. The fl has some of the best looking headlamp units I've seen in a modern car

Yeh pals, I know that fl xenons are awesome... but I dont like their shape at all, I cant help it! Imho, pre-fl has a sharper nose in general, facelift design looks fatter and with those headlights that remind me a granny’s glasses! Now seriously, I was looking for a Common rail Tdi after having a Golf V “Bkd” whose engine exploded after a oil pump failure 😅

And this is the diagram that Erwin gave me for a 2006 standard VRS:

P.s: I hope I downloaded the right diagrams

headlight.pdf cornering and range.pdf

Those diagrams certainly show the problems I was expecting.

You'll need an older range controller thats suitable for pre-fl xenons, your current one won't work. You'll need to check the level sensor part numbers to see if they are compatible between pre-fl and fl levelling systems too.

If they are low enough not to cause glare, they'll not be high enough to be useful. Even more so as you'll have no level control at all so you'd need to adjust the headlghts with a screwdriver whenever you had passengers or a load in the boot.

At the moment, the LED DRL strips have three connections, power, PWM dimming and ground. The BCM is configured to expect that style of load. If you instead fit the standard W5W bulbs you need to reconfigure the BCM to expect them and disable the DRL function.

VCDS can't access the lighting configuration. VCP (3rd party tool) and ODIS-e (dealer tool) are both able to change the lighting config. It's all part of the byte 18 magic that commonly messes up peoples lights :)

Wow, that's a lot of bad news😰 Anyway, thanks again for sharing your wishdom! I read this Briskoda post from a guy in Norway that had done this same front swap and didn´t mention all this stuff about lighting. He just talked about new bodywork assembly, if I had known all this mess was going to show up, I might have stop tweaking. But well, the thing is almost done so I will try it till the end! Here it is the scan I did this morning, but I guess it's not showing new things that the diagrams didn't show. Thanks again and again for your help!

Hi again!

I just took the car to the shop (electrical repair specialist) and hope they get at least, the headlight connections done. I was thinking about what you @langers2k said on replacing the xenon control unit. I’ve been digging the web and figured out that I need to replace the unit my car has installed (guess this one, the Afs version https://www.cars-equipment.com/en/shop/xenon-autoleveling-kits-parts-4/oem-5m0907357f-afs-lwr-controler-for/ ) with this other one https://www.ebay.es/itm/Skoda-Oktavia-Kombi-1Z-LWR-Steuergeraet-1T0-907-357-/333554014020 ( Lwr, non Afs). Does it make any sense to you? I’ve visited the oficial dealer and they wont let me know any of the part number unless I take the car there to be repaired. And guess what, they wont take my car to do that repair (as they are the common just-part-replacers kind of dealer). So, this is as far as I’ve gone. Thanks again for your help!

You have 5M0 907 357 C, it's mentioned in your autoscan ;)

Looking at these scans, 1T0 907 357 appears to be the correct module for earlier xenons systems:

Cool, so Vcds isnt just useful to configure the remote key buttons Haha (face palm, such a rookie myself). I’ll replace it then. Thanks so much again and again!

So, finally I got the basic lighting done: high beam, low beam, parking lights and turning lights. I had to buy 10 pin connectors since the FL uses 16 pin ones. Picked up the right pins and the connections were made.

But! Turns out the range control unit that you mentioned has a diferent type of plug that the one in the FL version. I removed the climate controls and removed the Oem xenon control unit, but the wiring loom won’t have the same plug on the end. So I dont know yet if it’s going to work. I hope so since you adviced it @langers2k, but now Im in stuck in a point where dont know how to continue. Could I replace the plug in the loom and try the old control unit or should I replace the entire loom/harnes?

Thanks in advance the help and have a great week you all!

You'll need to compare the two wiring diagrams and see how much of the original wiring is useful.

A quick flick through suggests you should be able to reuse power, ground, CAN-bus and the level sensor wires. You might need to make a couple of wiring looms for the headlights as the pre-FL looks to have 8 wires (4 to each headlight) for range control rather than 2 wires in the FL (CAN-bus).

Great! It doesnt sound that bad.. I guess I’ll be able To get those 8 cables passed through the dashboard. Thanks again!!

Hi again!

Finally I got to install the older range control unit. Replaced the connector keeping the right order of the cable loom. But turns out that the BCM seems not to be recognising the new control unit. So I took the car to the official Skoda dealer and they told me that they need the new lighting configuration code (xenon + H7) to be written into the BCM via (Odis-e) in order to replace the OEM code (bi-xenon). They aren't able to find out this new config code since they don't have the software and have to stick to my car VIN due to safety policy. Anyway, they offered to replace this light config code via Odis-e if I provide it to them. Any of you could throw me a hand with this? @langers2k may be? I feel I'm about to reach the end but don't want to give up so far! Thanks a lot in advance!!

p.d: They gave me a screenshot of my BCM configuration:

odise.jpg

Byte 14 bit 4 is 'xenons without shutters' installed.

No idea what you mean by the BCM not recognising the xenon unit though?

Have you got a VCDS autoscan?

I couldnt do a scan this time. The car is at the shop and didnt have the chance. The problem is that even with the pre-fl xenon control module installed, the car doesnt auto-level the xenon light when starting the car. Also, the lights remaing stable when car at idle, but when I hit the throttle they start to flash as crazy. Due to al this, I was told by the shop mechanics that the car BCM needs To be re-configured (Replace the hex code from the Corresponding byte in list Attached).

So, does it make sense to replace “01” with “04” in the Hex column of the line 14? (Screenshot attached). I’m confused haha! Thanks again anyway mate

All the coding in the BCM does is change the "bulb out warning" to accept a xenon ballast rather than a halogen bulb.

I believe the hex value should change from 01 to 11 in line 14 :)

That sounds right, and best of all, hopeful! I’ll try it and let you know. Thanks for your help! Do you like spanish ham? I think I’ll need to post you some when finishing this headlight conversion😉

Surely everyone likes Spanish ham!

After you've changed the byte 14 coding, if possible a new full autoscan from VCDS would be useful to help pinpoint any other obvious issues.

If the xenons aren't doing the up/down dance, that suggests something isn't right in the new range/AFS controller. Feels weird that they would start flashing as you rev the car though 😕
