2010 fabia 1.6tdi glow plug and eml lights

Featured Replies

Hello all, just recently purchased a 2010 1.6tdi mk2 fabia about 4 days ago. On my second day of driving a glow plug light came on, after a restart of the engine the glow plug light went off the morning after it was replaced with the engine management light. A scan from the local mechanic turned up a dpf pressure sensor error. The mechanic advised the previous owner probably didn't drive it right to clear out the dpf and I should give it a 'boot' so to speak and all will be fine. Doing that for the last couple of days the engine management light has not come back on. However the glow plug light has. Is this the best course of action. Does the dpf need cleaning? Or is it something else?

need to have the fault codes read.

The only way to clear a DPF is when it regenerates itself, this is done automatically by the car, or initiated by a diagnostic tool (not generic ones I may add proper VAG ones)

If there is a fault with the DPF pressure sensor, it will disable the regeneration, so giving it a size 2000 "boot" will make no difference.

It needs the diagnostic codes read and the fault fixed "before" anything else.

Hi thanks for the reply. The light for a regeneration has not been coming on  so does that mean it's the sensor and its disabled the regen? The mechanic said it was a dpf pressure sensor fault code but passed it off as just needing to clear. So it's likely a replacement of the sensor will solve my problem?

Im talking from experience with other car makes, I would assume VAG is the same.

It cannot perform a regeneration if the system is not fully functional, a faulty pressure sensor would "imo" disable the system.

What was the code for the pressure sensor fault ? was it / could it be cleared, has it been re-scanned since ?

The glow plug light is also a "fault" light, there will be a code stored for that, so it needs scanning again and if you need "help" here, "we" need the exact fault code / text to assist, even a photo of the scanner tool screen would suffice.

Its all well and good clearing codes and hoping for the best if you have your own diagnostic tool, if you don't ......then does not really help as you have to go back and forth and potentially spend more money.

The gent at the garage didn't tell me the fault code just told me it said dpf pressure sensor fault. And then cleared it for me. That was the engine management light the glow plug light has been on twice since. I'm unsure what exactly is the problem as I'm new to cars with a dpf. And if it's the sensor, the dpf or what. Should I have it rescanned and if needed replace the sensor?

Its possible the DPF code has "cleared" and not returned, cannot possibly ever know that, especially without a re-scan.

As I said, the car needs scanning again, there WILL be a fault stored, its your car, your fault code and your paying to find out what it is, so if you take it for a re-scan, ask for either a print out (if possible) or a screenshot, or let you photgraph it etc etc.

The point being, they could tell you anything, but the scan tool cannot lie, if they wont oblige then I would inclinded to go elsewhere.

No point in worrying about whether its the sensor or DPF  etc, get it scanned and find out what it says, and I cannot stress enough "word of mouth" from the mechanic is unhelpful here.

Okay thank you. I'll take it for a re scan somewhere and get the list of fault codes and see where to go from there.  I've only owned the car 4 days. Not the greatest luck on my part  the lights never came up on the test drive. Thanks again. I'll report back if I need any help with the codes

If you bought it from a garage, take it back to get them to fix it.

Also, add your location to your profile, there maybe someone "near" you with VCDS who can scan the car for you and let you know.

Private purchase unfortunately, so no chance of that. I'll update my profile now then
