Rattle

Featured Replies

I have a rattle from the C pillar area on driver's side and I cannot identify the source of the noise. It is a metallic rattle and sounds like a nut is coming undone on a component. I have removed the trim from the C pillar and the plastic cover hiding the seat belt mechanism and sat in the boot whilst my son drives the car. It sounds as though it is coming from the underside of the wheel arch, so yesterday I took the wheel arch lining out and checked there was nothing loose underneath and there wasn't!

Anyone else had this ? It is driving me nuts!

I had a rattle like that, for some reason it was the rear seat back rattling on the hook it locks onto in the upright position.

It was one of the earliest things I did to my car, wrapped the loop in a bit of duct tape. It’s still there, and silent 🙂

Yours may be from somewhere different but worth checking

Had thought of that possibility and drove the car with the seat down and rattle still there.

Thanks anyway.

Also, check the door latches (the metal loops that the door latches onto).  On my previous MKII Superbs both had metallic clonking noises easily solved by wrapping a strip of electrical tape around them.  I don't have a MKIII Superb, so please accept my apologies if the design of your door latch is different 🙂

Have checked the door latches and they are all tight, so don't think it is those. Thanks for the idea though.

I had a metalic rattle from the front nearside. Usually when turning right at low speeds on poor surfaces.  I guessed suspension related.

At routine 2 yr service they diagnosed rattling brake pads and fitted a shim kit under warranty. Apparently there was a TPI.  Cured the problem anyway. Back to silence.

Don't know whether this rattle only affects front brakes or which cars are affected. Mine is a May 2018 1.4Tsi estate.

I had a similar rattle on occasion and had checked a number of things. Having read this I dropped the seats today without anything in the boot and the car was silent. Thanks for your input, it pays to read through these posts. Will put some tape on the  hooks later. Thanks again👍

No problem, thanks for reporting back it’s nice to know I’ve helped 😁

Is it the plastic warning flag which pops up when the seat is unlocked? The one on mine was rattling; a small piece of felt glued behind it sorted it.

Don't believe it's coming from the seat as the noise is apparent with the seat locked in position and when it is down, but I will double check again.

Think I need to completely remove the wheel arch trim inside the boot to see properly what is rattling. I have partially removed the top to look inside. Has anyone removed this trim ? It looks as though the seat base has to be unbolted.

Do you have a towbar fitted? The control electronics of the towbar are glued to the the metal body in the boot. Maybe it came loose?

No towbar fitted, but thanks for the idea.
