Copy Amundsen Satnav Skoda 16Gb SD card to 32Gb

Featured Replies

The latest maps are on the Skoda Update Portal

The one that says for 32Gb card "just" fits on my Skoda 16Gb card, Files are about 14Gb but, there must be some sneaky stuff on it as it only shows about 600k Free

So. I thought I would try a bog standard 32Gb card

Copy files to card - won't work

Clone existing 16Gb card to a bog standard 32Gb card - won't work

Might try sector copy next - If I can be bothered

Anyone managed to copy Skoda 16Gb map card to a bog standard 32Gb card and get it to work?

PS - don't really need all of Europe on one card but, it's a bit of a challenge (currently not achieved)

It uses secure cards, the is a hidden partition that holds the licence for the Sat nav, it has to be a genuine Skoda Sat Nav Card.

Try reformatting the 16GB Skoda SD card to FAT32 but with the cluster size set to 2048 bytes instead of the default - there are thousands of very small files in the map data and with the default cluster size (8096 bytes) a huge amount of the SD card space is wasted.

That's not the issue - using cloning software to clone the card makes the card the same format . . .

Wow - see what you mean there ;-(

Assuming you did all that - i'm not even 100% sure it's the CID information the nav system uses to verify the card but it would seem likely 😛

Cheers

Didn't try it - not sure it's relevant, I think there are some hidden copy protection files on it somewhere

I can get the big map on a 16Gb card - just wanted to see if I could get a non-Skoda 32Gb card to work

So what is your issue?

I thought you were concerned about the small amount of free space on a 16GB SD card?

Since the Amundsen requires a genuine Skoda SD card as I see it you have 3 options:

1) work out which files you can leave out - which nobody has done yet and would be trial & error and take some time and experimentation

2) buy a 32GB Skoda SD card - which could be expensive

3) maximise the space usage on your current 16GB Skoda SD card - don't use the clone software, just format using Windows and copy the files (quick, easy and zero cost)

Petrol Dave, I don't have "an issue" I had a qyestion.

I have got the larger map on my 16gb card and it works.

If, in future the map size increases I may not be able to get it on without formatting the accessible partition with a different cluster size, which I understand.

I was hoping there would be a way to use a non Skoda 32Gb card, using some form of cloning or copying utility, so I was asking on this forum if anyone had managed to do it. It appears that this may not be possible.

It's well known there is no hidden data, it's just the SD card CID which needs to be correct.

Most SD cards have the CID locked but some versions of the Samsung Evo don't so it can be changed to match the original Skoda card. I have one here for when the maps do pass the 16GB limit which I previously used to trick my RNS-310 ;)

I'm sure I once saw that there's a file with a list of valid CIDs and some people figured out how to add an extra CID to cover their card. Can't seem to find it now though...

Can be ordered from China, I've seen on alibaba batches of change-able CID SD cards, various capacities, but they ask for like 20 to be ordered.

When we order then, we will need a device to put Škoda's CID onto them. If we succeed, not an issue to dispatch SD cards via basic envelope and share the costs of course.

Think about possibility. Maybe they will wait that the last one Octavia with 16Gb comes out of warranty?

Yup, plenty of sellers on eBay are happy to change the CID before dispatching cards too.

Once 32GB is required, I'd expect to see a spike of eBay sellers offering suitable cards ;)

I have 32Gb Skoda cards here for sale, if anyone is desperate to have one. 😉

Ah, so reformatting with  a smaller cluster size make better use of the card space and does not affect the CID on the card - champion

I've really no intention of travelling abroad but I want to see if I can fit the 13Gb (zip) on my 16gb Skoda SD card.  There are folders for SEAT and VW that can probably be deleted and what I think are language files with 100's of megabytes.  I wonder how large it is unzipped?

The 13.5GB zip I downloaded from VW tail end of last year unpacked to 14GB, it fitted on the 16GB without needing to delete stuff

Thanks @Kenai

It will be a tight fit as a "16Gb" card holds 16,000,000,000 bits, which is closer to 14 proper Gb.  (It's 16 - 6.8% or 14.9 less some used for the file system).

I just checked three 16Gb SD's and their useable capacity is 14.3Gb!

Well, it works!  The very latest, all-Europe maps* will fit on the standard Skoda 16GB card despite the note saying that it requires the 32GB one.

Unzip the download on your computer before sending to the SD Card, it's much, much quicker.

I have just copied the 20/21 Europe maps download on to my 16gb Škoda SD Card, tight fit but works fine. I work in IT and was looking for options to perhaps clone the Škoda SD Card to a big capacity card. If the card CID is mapped to the head unit them how come there are so many cards for sale on EBay. Surely none of these would work if the CID is different from the original card supplied with the car. Do we know that these cards work, if so then the CID of the SD card is irrelevant.

Has anyone tried to DD a card from the linux command line. Should be a way to image all partitions on a card using this method. Will have to experiment.
