Airbag light on

Featured Replies

Hi I have 2003 1.2 fabia I removed my airbag on the steering wheel to check contacts on my horn. I first disconnected the battery then after I removed the airbag I reconected the battery. Now I have the airbag light on continuous. Have I got to have fault code rectified anyone know please

Yes, the code needs clearing.

Thanks thought as much

You might be lucky and be able to do that with one of the cheap, generic code readers rather then vcds. Some things are easy, others more tricky.

Thanks have to have a look at getting one

The airbag is fairly sensitive and I've heard you have to keep them inside facing up if you remove them. I was extra carful removing mine and no lights came on.

You didn't reconnect the battery and cycle the ignition with the airbag disconnected, doing that is what set the flag on the OP's ECU.

A similar to problem to a post a couple of month ago when the battery and airbag were unplugged to replace the fan speed control thyristor pack which is situated under the airbag on the passenger side.

I have to do mine on my Roomster as speed 1 has packed up. I have not done it because of the airbag light problem. Is it difficult?

The heater fan speed controller is not a thyristor and it's not a relay, it's just a resistor. On a Mk1 Fabia the battery does not need disconnecting and the passenger airbag does not need touching to replace the resistor. You just remove the glovebox, which is dead easy.

He disconnects the battery in this video but there is really no need. He also calls the resistor a ''sensor''. It's not a sensor. However, the rest of the video is a good guide....

There are a few Roomster videos here (also same as a MK2 Fabia I think).....

Make sure your cabin filter isn't choked up as that is a common cause of resistor failure.

I have same issue I had steering wheel off as it needed to be moved 1 click to the right to even it up and now airbag light on I will admit I never disconnected the battery on it so how do I get light to go off I used my scanner but it says no fault code and i tried to erase anyway but stays on now.

Did you use VAG-COM/VCDS?

Steering wheel should never need moving, if it wasn't straight it means the tracking wasn't correct.

Thats why I moved it as ive done all the suspension work and since it went off and had tracking set the steering wheel was slightly left.

They should have adjusted it so that it was correct and the steering wheel was centred, which usually means adjusting both tie-rod ends instead of just one. Laziness probably, or one was seized so they had to do it all on the other.

I know what you mean mate what annoys me is when I did the front shocks and springs I also swapped out the anti roll bar links and bushes, ball joints and track rod ends so i,m assuming they had the steering wheel slightly off center when they set it.

Ive tried battery off for a bit and and had air bag back off again etc to make sure connected but this light will not go off and I got my mot in 2 months thats an instant fail 😞

VCDS Lite is your friend.

Less than £20 for a suitable cable, free software download from Ross-tech, bit of faffing to get it all working on a laptop then you have diagnostics and fault clearing for next to nothing.

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Functions

I have no reason to believe you'd need to register the software to clear an airbag fault code, but I could test with a previously unused laptop if no-one else can confirm.

I have a decent scanner thought it would have resolved the issue icarsoft vag2 scanner guess I need to look into vcds.

Do you know where I can get the cable from ???

I have this one, but there are millions of similar ones out there, including many cheaper ones I expect.

VW Audi Seat Skoda USB Interface for VAG-COM 409.1 or VCDS Lite - most VAG 1996-2003 (gendan.co.uk)

Cheaper one that's probably identical, others will poss be even cheaper:

OBD2 USB cable, FTDI FT232RL | eBay

Don't bother with any off ebay that come with software on a CD or similar, you're far less likely to bring spyware onto your lappy if you download the Lite software direct from its authors, Ross-tech.
