Pealing Lacquer

Featured Replies

Anyone have advice for a DIY fix for this issue?

Not looking for anything show quality, just a smarten it up job.

Full respray is not an option due to cost.

Use clear nail varnish or get a very fine air brush and spray paint some clear coat on there after you have made sure that no more is peeling of

Does the rough edge need sanding or flating back to stop any more peeling?

polishing with a cutting compound would suffice

You can't do a cheap DIY when it comes to paint or lacquer. The entire body part should be resprayed following careful preparation steps. Anything else will not blend but will stick out like a sore eye.

I repaired a dent in my front wheel arch & lower part of the wing, its a solid colour blue, I blew in half of the panel using basecoat and then lacqueur and I challenge anybody to even see the blend line.

It can be done especially with clear coat over a solid colour, admittedly a horizontal panel like a bonnet is the hardest.

Compound wont help the OP as its a base & clear finish with peeling lacqueur.

Yes it should be properly flatted before the clear coat applied & then flatted & compounded when dried.

thats exactly why i suggested compounding, to flaten the edge of the "unharmed" lacqueur

Compunding decade(s) old German 2 pack clear coat to a feather edge, - Do you really believe that or are you speaking from experience?

What would be best to feather the edges of the old clear coat?

Wet & Dry paper?

If so what grade?

I'm not being rude but don't you have really poor eyesight?

I can still see colours thankyou. I have monocular and not binocular vision.

I have 10/10 vision with glasses in the functional eye.

The repair was done mainly by feel which is a skill I developed 45 years ago when my eyesight was as good as anyones, when filling & flatting the human eye cant see what will show up when the colour coat goes on but the fingertips can with experience.

You could look at the panel and you might see where the repair is by looking up from the ground in bright light, it has sunk and I wasn't after perfection, but you wont see the line between the old & new paint.

@J.R.

Having strong convictions doesn't mean your reality is our reality too. But if it makes you feel better you did an exemplary job, dream on brother.

Thankyou for your kind & reassuring words Ricardo 😀

I will sleep easier knowing in the knowledge that I have your blessing to carry on dreaming.

Actually @J.R. is right fingertips (and teeth) are far better at discerning edges or differences in height and texture than the eye.  That's why, when you are classifying soil types and clays you use your fingertips fingernails and teeth.
