Beru vs Ngk vs Bosch

Hi

I want to change myself spark on my Octavia 3 1,4 tsi 140 hp, which one should I by ?

Any. On a standard car I don't think you will pick a difference.

If you go to 7zap and look up the spark plugs (you may have already done this) quite often the genuine part is sourced from more than one manufacturer and usually Beru, NGK, or Bosch. It may also list the gaps and resistance values.   There can be slight differences in gap and resistance but honestly I don't think you will notice on a standard engine. Soemtimes aftermarket equivalent parts are slightly different again to in terms of specs.

If you want total compatibility without looking at lots of spark plug charts and technical docs get the genuine but they are often at a premium.  I have used Bosch and NGK after market equivalents most often but know that BERU is an alternative as well. Usually a little harder to source but depends on your motor factor.

How often do you change them? What service manual says?

If they are the correct spec plugs the make shouldn’t matter. Personally I got Bosch for mine last time.

My advice is get a proper puller for removing the ignition coils, and make sure the engine is warm first. The coils can be very hard to remove, but I have had no problem using the proper tool.

This is the one I’ve got :

Also, put a small bead of dielectric grease around the end of the rubber of the coil, it will help for next time.

Did not change them myself, I just had them changed at the major service for my 1.4tis at about 50k km and 5 years.

I did ask for the old spark plugs to be kept so I could examine wear and they did.

Quite honestly the plugs were showing hardly any wear, I think they could have done another 20k+ km with no problem at all, but it was a relatively minor cost although I did not notice any difference in performance.

This is not a high performance engine so any genuine spark plug you mentioned will do.

As an aside, a few years ago I retrieved an old  Toyota Echo from from my daughter who was issued a company car (Golf GTi) and the echo had missed a 'few' services so I undertook a major service myself. The standard spark plugs were incredibly worn and about 3x the recommended space. I was somewhat disappointed there was no subsequent noticeable change in performance or economy.

In short if your car is going ok at the moment then do not expect too much when you change the plugs.

Dont forget that although the tips may not be showing signs of wear. The cores can degrade as they are mainly  copper.  I changed my plugs every service for what they cost.

Is there an option in VCDS 20.4.1 to check plugs condition measured in percent or volts or something like that?  Mine Octavia 1.4 tsi 150 bhp is 62 000 km and theoretically I should change plugs. But engine starts fine at each outdoor temp, accelerates normally without hasitation. The only worrying things I've noticed is a bit of shakes while driving slowly first few meters on cold engine in the morning and small shakes from time to time on hot engine on idle at traffic lights. I plan to change plugs at next service in december. What do you think - should I wait to next service (car will be 70 000 km then) or change them now?

If you are at all worried get it done, at least that way if you do have any starting or running issues it's a ✔ in the box that will automatically eliminate one of the possible issues, therefore saving time and money of a technician.

Thanks TheWanderer. Gonna do it by myself (got all needed tools and informations). Many says plugs in CZDA engine can work properly longer then service manual indicates. That's why I suggested to delay changing till next service. Have to think it through.

if possible, stick to whats in it now

I work at a Renault dealers, and we have had a few issues over time with 'non-genuine' spark plugs causing issues, doesnt happen with the vast majority of cars though

i have access to the OE catalogue online if you want to pm me your chassis number, it will sometimes tell you what the OE plug actually is, it will be made by Bosch/Beru/NGK/similar

Thanks BRUN but I know which model of plugs to buy. It will by NGK although factory puts Bosch.

You can see my comments above on replacing my plugs at 50k km and I estimated that another 20k km would have been ok.

Even though your car is running ok 70k km seems a good distance to change them and they are not really a major expense in the grand scheme of things.

The initial cold start jerkiness is common on the 1.4tsi and apparently something to do with warm up process and emission controls.

Occasionally the cold start jerkiness does not occur (coincidentally just this morning) and the average consumption at at 1 km from home is then always about 2L/100 better than when the jerkiness is present.

Thanks Garrycan. I was thinking about your post typing about delaying change of plugs till december. If something is working properly there's no need to change it. "Tired" plugs would have signalized it by problems with starting the engine or constant jerkinnes while accelerating or at idle. Don't have any of these things. So will wait till december, maybe end of november and will do it at next service. It'll be great to drive at the beginning of winter on fresh oil, filters and plugs - winters in Poland can be cold and humid.
