How to get those lights work

Featured Replies

Hey everyone, I am in NZ. I know some area the lights in the photo works and some are not. Mine doesn't. Just wondering if anyone know how I can get them working and is it hard to get them going? Do I need extra parts?

Cheers

U need SLA headlights - part number ends in .B

This version light up the whiskers.

This version also does the high beam masking, like the matrix LEDs.

I've done the retrofit myself.

In addition to the headlights, u need different AFS modules, new D3S rings, vcds code changes and a new 4B parameter file loaded via VCP or ODIS.

Thanks. Do u know roughly how much all the parts costed you? Cheers

I sourced my headlights from eBay, secondhand, n from different sellers.

So I got it cheap - cost me less than $1000 all up.

However they're hard to find secondhand.

Otherwise, u'd b looking between AUD$1000-1500 per headlight.

The AFS controllers were $200 a pair.

The D3S rings were about $40.

I had a friend u has VCP and ODIS, so I didn't need to get the service centre to help.

Or, get a cheap DRL kit off eBay and stick it under/behind the headlight.

Those whisker things are made of see through plastic and they light up really well with some bright LEDs

I haven’t done it but discovered this when I removed my headlight and shone a torch through.

It would probs cost about £50 if that, and the DRL kits dim the LEDs when your headlights come on so it would work pretty well.

Beats paying £NOPE for whole new light units

Those lights were only £100 extra when I ordered the car but could easily have been missed if I hadn’t realised their relevance.

A similar thing happened with my first Octavia VRS as I didn’t spec the £125 MFD upgrade and therefore had to miss out on some additional features. That mistake wasn’t repeated on the second one though and xenons were also added amongst other things as they were preferable to the previous model’s yellow candle powered illumination!

Thanks, I will have a look into it. 😁

Unfortunately mine was the ex-demo so couldn't pick options. 😞

Hahaha....if ur prepared to open up the headlights!!

They're sealed units which can't b opened unless u bake the things in an oven to soften the glue, and then pry the thing apart, before u can get access to the base of those LED whiskers.

But sure.....its worth a go if one is desperate.

I got dizzy just reading about the cost and the fuss to get 7 little decorative lines to light up, wow...  And i thought a Milltek cat-back was too expensive :tongueout:

The 7 little decorative lines was the "bonus" bit - the whole point of the retrofit was to get Smart Light Assist function, which was never an option for the Oz bound Superbs.

I have the SLA on my L&K, should the whiskers be on with the DRL ???

No.

Only with the main lights.

Ah that's ok....mine are working correctly so. The picture at the top of the thread shows them on with the DRL, I thought I was missing a setting.

Ah....

@JR RS does appear to have them without the headlights being on. Maybe that's down to the retrofit coding?

Does it really make such a big difference in your driving or was it the thought that you don't even get the option to choose that was torturing you more? :D

I have it on mine and still i had to Google what Smart Light Assist offers :tongueout:

From factory, SLA whiskers r active only when the low beams r on, as u said.

But u can however change this via coding so it's on with the DRLs, which is wat I've done.

Like the DRLs, the whiskers will also dim when the low beams r turned on.

Anyone with SLA headlights can use VCDS/OBDEleven to code this in.

I do country road driving often enough, hence the SLA is a great aid.  ....n trust me, u don't want to b hitting a kangaroo or wombat at 110 km/h.

So the SLA masking does a great job keeping the road sides lit up without dazzling the car I'm following or any oncoming cars.

I won't argue with kangaroos for sure!

Yup, that's the one I used.

There is no need to open the headlights, those glass “whiskers” run to the back of the headlight and at the back is a large piece of the same material that runs across each “whisker.”

It would be possible to install a flexible LED strip along this connecting piece, using a pair of long nose pliers or similar through the bulb caps.

I reckon it’d be a pain, but entirely possible and worth a go before spending a grand 😂

Right, I've discovered that they come on if you put the switch to the side light position. It's amazing what goes through your mind when you're parking your car!!!!

Old thread I know, but unfortunately, it dims the DRL strips in the sidelight position.
