Aircon not working and metallic fan noise when turned on

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My car is a Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI Elegance with Climatronic. Aircon has worked perfectly for years (I leave it on Auto) up until a couple of days ago. A couple of days ago when I started the car I noticed a metallic noise like a metal fan rubbing against something, but when it is just the fan with aircon off then the noise goes away. The air also seems to be the same temperature with the fan running regardless of whether the aircon is on.

I've never had it re-gassed or any issues with it. Any ideas please?

Try listening under the glove box, because that's where the heater fan is mounted. If the noise is coming from there then you can fairly easily remove the fan housing and motor.

Check on You tube for removal instructions. If the fan is "XXX" then replacements are available from Euro Car Parts.

However if as you  say the noise stops when the A/C is off then I would say the compressor/ bearings has gone.

Again parts available from Euro Car parts  and https://www.autodoc.co.uk/ both much cheaper then Skoda.

Thanks for that. The noise isn’t coming from under the engine where the compressor is, and the gas pipe leaving the compressor gets hot which suggests it is working, so I think it’s inside. Like you said though the noise goes away when it’s just the fan so really not sure.

Just had this fixed - it just needed a re-gas.

Apparently when it gets low then the gas can prematurely boil inside the heater matrix inside the car which causes the loud metallic sound i could hear. All fixed (although I think £96 for a re-gas is a bit steep!)

I think I've got the same problem. Now I know what to do about it. I've been thinking of getting a full aircon service. I get the metallic rattle for a couple of seconds, stops for a second then does it again. This just continues until, like you say, I turn off the climate control.

Mine has done this from new and i am convinced that it is the compressor. The tinkling metalic sound stops instantly the AC is turned off.

So turns out my car is still broken. All the gas has escaped out the system so must be a leak, going to try putting in a new condenser tomorrow.

Mine now sorted. It turns out the compressor/pump was knackered and was the reason it was rattling. £420 fitted for a new one.

That’s cool (excuse the pun)

as the gas has all left the car then it’s likely to be a leak in the system and not the pump. My father in law used to be a mechanic and refrigerant engineer so on his knowledge we’ve changed the condenser.

Thanks for this.

had a roaring noise behind glovebox and metallic fan sound from behind radio.

Regas fixed symptoms.

bad news was it looks like my compressor control valve is on the way out.

No problem. Replacing the condenser fixed the problem, the metallic noise was caused by low gas level in the system that led to the gas boiling inside the evaporator inside the car.
