Another point - would you say most of the 140 TDIs seem to be automatics, and most 2.0 FSIs manual?

Reason I ask is because it strikes me that to blast quickly past M-way traffic, if you have DSG and just floor the gas, the box is going to do a lot of the "thinking" for you [and do it quickly]. I've noticed the manual FSI only comes into its own when you get exactly the right gear, usually 3 or 4, and with a 6 speed box that is a learning curve in itself.

I have never driven an auto car with the exception of one of the 2.0TDI's that i have tested being a DSG. Don't really think you can use that as a reason, although as has been said it's really down to what you like and fuel economy etc.

If I wasn't doing the mileage it would be petrol for me every time. Mind you, I may well buy a petrol next time, the rate at which diesel prices are going up, it may well be worth it for me ...

There are LOTS of new refineries being planned or under construction all over the world. So the recent surge in diesel prices relative to petrol could change by the time you're ready for your next car.

Also, instead of just looking at cost per liter, it's better to work out fuel cost per mile. All else being equal, diesel cars are still cheaper to operate.
