Just been doing a little reading up on here about the octy and noticed a few people arguing that the diesel is only for people doing high millage

Where I'm sure this is true to some extent am I the only person who actually like the torque of the diesel and the fact that although parkers rate it .3 of a second slower than the FSI I bet it leaves it for dust when comparing in gear acceleration.... I just wanted to see what other people though?

No I like my diesels and this TDI is no slouch even when coupled to the DSG box, also I have always found diesels to be more reliable than petrol engines reliant on electrical circuits.

In money terms, especially in the UK, the extra cost of buying a diesel powered vehicle takes a very long time to recover that extra outlay, the higher your annual mileage the quicker you recover that difference.

That said I still my diesel power just the same as I prefer a station waggon over a saloon or hatchback, it's your vehicle buy what pleases you and if like me you think manually shifting gears is for the birds go for the DSG box it is great.

unfortunately the ex demo didn't have a dsg box and I couldn't afford to buy a new one... Personnaly like changing manually though

I bought Diesel because i like the way they drive, ie low down torque. I only do proberbly about 8,000miles a year, in my car anyway.

My last 4 cars have been diesel, have found all of them to be more reliable than my previous petrol cars but I did change to buying diesels because i do high mileage. My Fabia VRS was the fastest car I have had, and it was just thrilling to feel all that torque. My new Octy 1.9tdi estate also has great pulling power but not quite like the fabia vrs (not that I expected it too as I bought it for a specific purpose). I am still a fan of diesel, I hire a car in Ireland each year on holiday and those are petrol but I would still go for diesel even if i was doing a lot less mileage. Am disappointed that more and more people now opt for deisel as I think this has helped pushed the price of diesel to more per gallon than unleaded.

Love the way diesels drive :) Much more relaxed on the m/way and better acceleteration (or feels it) when you are already going.

I had a non turbo-charged XUD in a citroen BX and that was still far better to drive than any of the petrol cars I have driven.

Well this is my first diesel after only having petrols and I must say I am impressed. Okay they are not as quiet as a petrol on startup and on first starting in the morning they stink especially if you reverse out with the windows open and get a car full of fumes.

On the motorway at spped the engine is quieter than a petrol or at least my old Accord, but the engine is ticking over at 1.5K Revs compared to 5K for the Honda so will be quieter.

Personally my next car will also be a diesel, so would recommend them.

Nope , I'm right there with you.

Economically diesel is much better for high mileage drivers but I prefer the torque and would try to stick with diesel even if I wasn't doing so many miles

I have had both petrol and diesel cars now of varying types, for me turbo diesel is the more enjoyable to drive, its such a rush when the turbo kicks in.

I don't think I will ever own another petrol car unless I win the lottery, 'cos you need to spend at least twice the money to get that same feeling in a petrol.

My vRS Fabia is just such a hoot to drive!

Go for the diesel. Haven't yet dared to put the boot down in our brand new 2.0 TDi DSG, but when I did on a hired SEAT (same engine and gearbox) it laid rubber down the road for 20m. Whooaah!

Good good, glad to here I'm not the only one who thinks they driver better, ok SWMBO's clio 182 still wins hands down for how fun it is to drive but certainly prefered the old Fab VRS to the current golf turbo, hence going back to skoda and a diesel

The 2.0 TDI power delivery is different to the 1.9 TDI though.

It's spread over more of the rev range due to it being 16V rather than 8V.

Have you ever thought about the SEAT's - Ibiza TDI Sport/FR or Leon TDI Sport/FR?

Still VAG 130/150 1.9 PD's.

I prefer petrol cars, they suit the way I drive.

I am on my first ever diesel - even after 2 years and 108,000 miles I still want to drive it like a petrol. The only reason I bought it was that I do fairly high mileage (50-60k per year).

If I wasn't doing the mileage it would be petrol for me every time. Mind you, I may well buy a petrol next time, the rate at which diesel prices are going up, it may well be worth it for me - or even a hybrid or alternative fuel one (like the new SAABs).

I think that 0.3 of a second doesn't amount to much.

Don't get too bogged down by performance claims because that's all they are.

They vary from car to car and your best bet is to make your own mind up with a 3 day test drive. That's what I did. Now I save a fortune on Insurance & Fuel. :)

Thought about them I hate Ibiza's with a vengance, they are just awful looking things... I loved the old model leon but after test driving that and a fabia Vrs back to back I didn't actually fit in the leon so bought the fabia.

With the octavia it was the boot space as we had wanted to buy a Rav4 as we need a bigger car but after looking at an octy with the seats down and the performance figures (12. odd in the rav 4) the octavia could be missed... plus having had the fabia and loved it to bits I have a good opinion of skoda so wanted to stick with them

True but you are driving an SDi, which is a lot less nice to drive that a chargecooled diesel engine :)

Oh so true, but it does seem to pull very nicely. I appear to have power from 1800 rpm all the way to the redline, very unlike a TDI :D

True you will have power for over a greater rev range but it will be alot less power than the TDI

I'd agree with that - I'm only driving a diesel because I do 20k a year and by my calculations, I'm (currently!) saving a good wodge of cash over a petrol. I do miss the refinement, the sound and the rev range of a petrol though and would happily switch back :D

Apperently you can get the Golf Mk V in SDI guise. I'm not sure why though. 68bhp is simply not enough to safely shift around a golf or octy IMO.

I bought a freelander TD4 3 years ago and every car since has been diesel. I only do about 9k a year but i'd never consider buying a petrol car again except maybe something with a turbo to run at the weekends.

You get used to that fantastic torque in a turbodiesel. Normally asperated petrol cars of similar capacity are feeble in comparison. You'll not get a better blend of performance and economy for your money than the 2.0 TDi IMO . Every effortless overtaking manouvre still makes me smile. It's addictive.

Also with regards to the diesel/petrol thing, figures seem to suggest that a Golf Mk5 Tdi only needs to cover a few thousand miles a year to meet the extra cost of it’s purchase. This is mainly due to the fact it depreciates much slower than a petrol Golf of similar spec.

nowaday turbo'd cars drive very much like a diesel.in the vx, the torque kicks in at 1900 rpm and then the added bonus of 200 bhp at i think 5500 rpm. the octy 2 vrs accelerating in a similar way. so the "mid range" arguement for a diesel tbh isnt really that valid nemore. (expecting some backfire from that comment). agreed they generally have better mpg. personally i do about 400 miles a week and the vx is costing about 10-15 quid more per week. so i could imagine something that wasnt so race bred closing the gap even more. (on the subject of mpg. what are the octy 2 vrs drivers averaging? my bruvs getting 26 mpg and he's not kaning it everywhere so why so low?)

Mine has 74(ish) and seems capable of being punted along at an adequate rate of knots. ;)

Must be the Magic Tree air freshener that gives it the extra ooomph :rofl:
