Columbus slow starting - firmware and map update?

Featured Replies

Hi all, No matter how much I try and research the slow start up of my columbus and updating the firmware and maps, I get no real answers, I hope you can help point me in the right direction.

The slow start up, well, it takes ages to get to a stage where I can change an input or anything on the radio, sometimes 2 mins! My maps are also so far out of date that roads I know well that have been there for years are not shown on the maps, so any guides could be useless when visiting places I don't know, which is quite often as I drive a lot up and down the country and it would be nice to be able to rely on such maps shoudl I ever get stuck.

So I am looking at a firmware update and also a map update, if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great! I'll add a couple of pics of my HW and map stats below!

Thank you in advance!

Slow start up is something you gonna have to get used to I'm afraid. It's  just something that is what it is.

A software update might make a slight difference as usually it's about 67 seconds from cold boot to full functionality. You might have a crooked software which needs straightening out. Maps as you say are well out of date.

Software updates are not without possible bad consequences, so be aware that if your unit is starting to fail then an update could cause problems. You could Google 5238 Josi for a possible update path, and also Google 8557 ( V17)  maps for the latest ones available.

Or you could head to eBay and find a seller who will supply you with both maybe, or there are sellers with a web presence who can provide the same. Both of these options are simply people who have googled what I told you and are selling the result of that search. Don't be fooled into thinking they sell genuine maps which cost about £180 from the dealers.

Or I offer a repair service whereby I'll wipe the unit & reload it to fix the possible software corruption.

@Rustynuts

Would changing my hard drive to ssd make any benefit on reaction times of unit?

Quite happy with unit just feels it needs a supercharger strapped to it😀

Failing that might just put a couple of racing stripes or MaxPower stickers on it see if that works

No, it wouldn't make much difference. The hard drive isn't functional to the units startup, its just a storage medium for the maps & music. An SSD drive would mean it accessed the maps quicker, but it wouldn't make the machine faster at getting ready to access them.
