Severe vibration problems on Superb S3

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I just bought a Skoda Superb S3 Combi TDI DSG 190cv 4x4 from the year 2016 with only 18,000 km and an impeccable exterior and interior condition.

When picking up the car at an official Skoda dealer in Granada (Spain) with the Das Weltauto "guarantee", the car vibrated from 110 km / h to 140 km / h, approximately. They made me a parallel and balanced of tires and it seems that it improved, they told me that it was the tires and that by changing them it would improve, but when I returned to my home in Madrid (500kms) the trip was horrible.

The seats vibrated creating fatigue, the steering wheel, the sun visors ...

I changed the tires by putting Michlein Primacy 4, with balanced and parallel (750 euros), the official dealer, he paid me only 2.

The vibrations continue. I went to another official dealer and they left me another Superb S3 from the year 2020 and only 11,000 km and it vibrated the same, it cannot be that a car like that vibrates so much.

Tomorrow I will take it back and leave it for repair or solution.

Has it happened to anyone? How was it solved? I am really worried about all this, it has been a significant outlay of money.

I attach a video from yesterday.

Thank you very much and greetings from Spain.

This is just a hunch but your 4 year old diesel Superb has a suspiciously low mileage and I suspect it has suffered a major accident and been badly repaired by a non Skoda dealer and this has led to a chassis that is not as stiff as it should be and as the speed increases on the motorway the vibration increases being felt throughout the cabin including the seats. It would not be this bad if it was just some missing wheel weights on the alloys or a defect in a tyre for example.

As I have been told by the official dealer, the car belonged to some English pensioners who only used it for a few months a year.

All the nematics were of the same date except one, which was more modern. I have not observed any damage to the body or engine.

Having watched the video with the vibrating sun visor that is something you expect to see in a convertible Audi A3 with the roof down driving on a bumpy road not a smooth Spanish highway. This suggests a not very rigid chassis like when you remove the top off a shoe box and the bottom half becomes floppy.

Would you rule out a transmission problem, suspension or something easily fixed?  The Das Weltauto certification is useless?  The seller literally told me that he had not had any serious blow ...

Unless others on here have a similar issue with the 190PS diesel engine with DSG and 4wd combination it is difficult to identify the problem.

I've had a 4x4 with transmission shake under acceleration. It's a much lower vibration, more like a massage chair on an unpleasant setting. Not visible as such.

Putting the worst case on the table, do you have an option to reject the vehicle?

Ask the garage to do a full inspection of the suspension.

It could be as bad as shy suggests.

I've certainly not seen or experienced in any of the superbs I've been in or tested.

You mentioned you tried another similar, and had similar effects... that would make me wary of assuming the worst case; ie repaired badly, on your vehicle, unless both were badly repaired.

Tyres are just the start, work up from there, I've had wobbles induced from busted cv seals, broken springs... basically anything that moves, or shouldn't move ;)

I keep coming back to that second test car doing the same is making me wary it's anything... very confusing.

What a terrible start to your ownership.

Tomorrow I will leave it in the official service.  If they tell me that they do not know where the fault is or that it has had a strong blow, I will request a refund.

The fact that you stated it had 3 tyres the same make and 1 odd one suggests it may have had a hard impact on a kerb or something else resulting in a badly damaged alloy which was replaced with a new one and a different make of tyre which was probably a cheaper one as well. Other suspension damage can be caused by such severe loads going through one corner as @ColinD has already mentioned. If they can't identify and rectify to your satisfaction I would reject the car and make sure your next purchase has a rigorous and extensive highway test before purchase. Good luck.

Evidently something has.  If that something has an easy and cheap solution, I will continue with the car, if not I will return it if they let me ...

Modern diesels don’t like sitting about. Without a test drive it’s hard to narrow the area down. Could be an injector issue. Could be a shaft or joint issue. Could be a haldex issue. Does the vibration change if you pull the dsg back into sport or change down a gear when the vibration starts.
is it the road surface seeing as the other vehicle you had did the same thing.
I would have added flat spotted tyres, but you’ve changed them already.
could also be a shock absorber fault, or if fitted, could be in sport setting. Try comfort to see if it changes.
Best to let the main dealer look at it and see what they come up with before you panic too much.

Thank you very much for calming me down, the truth is that I'm having a lot of stress with all this ... Putting the vibrations in neutral at the same speed (120-130kms / h), but yesterday when accelerating it vibrated too. The best thing before you start thinking about suing anyone is that the official service diagnose the fault. Thanks again.

At 4yrs old the haldex and DSG should have both been serviced, regardless of mileage. Check with dealer while they have it. The other thing to check is your brakes. If one of the callipers is sticking or seizing once warmed up a bit, it will cause the issue you describe. Take the car for a drive, or until the vibration starts and see if one of the wheels is a lot warmer to touch than the rest of them.
I’ve also replaced air con pumps causing vibration due to being seized, and sitting wouldn’t have helped it either.
the list goes on, but they should be able to source it when you leave it with them.
best of luck!!

Just a thought... the rubber donuts that join the prop shaft to gearbox and diff.. are they ok !!! The earlier yetis 4x4 2014- had the problem where these would seize and split causing a vibration at higher speeds !!!

Today I tried to put the spare wheel on and it circulates with it (16 "), I could not. I skipped the traction control and I could not drive more than 1 km. When removing the wheel it was so hot that the screws burned... I just left the car at the official service. Something has.

  • Administrators

The only time I’ve handled wheel nuts that hot was after a track day in an old bmw... there was an odd knocking as we left the circuit to get fuel. I climbed out of the cage, noticed a wheel bolt, thought, oh that’s dangerous best move it... hot... found two more.

An amusing aside, but that much heat, something is binding. Edit, it’s with them now, trust, but don’t accept it back if it’s not right.

To hot to handle after 1km is not right at all... unless it was down an alpine pass.

fingers crossed for you. Stay safe.

Thank you very much.

That sounds like a sticking caliper, which does happen when cars aren't driven regularly.... my wifes car that has very low mileage, has just had a sticking caliper repaired. Other than that, the vibration could be a warped disc.

Yes, very likely the caliper is seized. Given the mileage you've driven with it in that condition, if thats whats at fault (very likely), theres no chance your discs have survived. They'll be the same shape as an old wax record. Best get them changed with new pads as well. It'll be like a new car when you get it back.

The car has been in the official dealer since Monday.  without news.  hopefully they find the fault and we can fix it and laugh at all this.

My fingers are crossed for you @Gabrielem

Hopefully they loaned you a decent courtesy car and not a Citigo?

Thank you very much.

The truth is that I did not ask, I saw a list of prices per day (they started at 29 euros per day for a Fabia) and  since I have another small car at home I was not interested.

By the way, forgive the spelling mistakes because I translate with google and although sometimes I correct the translator, I prefer to use it because it is faster for me.

I promise photos of the car, which although it is already known, at least so that you know the one that is causing me headaches ...

Any spelling mistakes are of course forgiven!

Your English (and translated English) is much better than any of our Spanish!

I have come to test the car that they called me from the council and it is practically the same, I say practically because it has cost me a lot to find a piece to be able to put a 120-130, practically everyone has come on vacation and there is already traffic at 6  pm.

They have checked that there are no clearances in transmissions, they have looked at the silemblocks, they have checked if there was any exchange part or any part changed by a blow and everything has been ok.

The horny thing they have told me is that they have put the four wheels of the other Skoda that I tested and that it also vibrated which they had to make a parallel to it because according to what they told me it had been hit by some commercial and that it vibrated the same both one and the other.  .. Totally I have told him to get another wheels and to try other wheels, that if necessary I will pay him the test.

They have rebalanced the wheels and there is one that has given them war and they want to test it with another machine that measures the pressure exerted by each wheel or something like that.

I have verified that the right front wheel is hotter than the left rim, he commented on this because I don't know which forero commented that one of the calipers could have seized and you are braking the wheel, I have commented on this and they have told me that  it does not vibrate if you brake the wheel.

Finally, the car is still in the official service waiting to do a new test and it seems that they have focused on the rims.

Honestly, I no longer know what to think about whether to tell him to leave me a model just like they have around or try a Passat or shoot me.

I think that if it is not solved with the next attempt it will cost me a lot to keep looking at the official service ...
