Sportline Suspension Upgrade?

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I’ve got a 190 diesel Sportline with DSG.  It has regular passive suspension. 2017.

I find it far too soft. On the motorway it often rocks and nods over gentle undulations. Around town it can be thumpy. On B roads it has a lot of vertical movement and often runs out of travel - landing on the bump stops with a thud.

To me it feels like the car is under sprung a little (needs firmer springs) and it’s certainly way under damped (shocks need more resistance in both compression and rebound to control body).

Only thing I really don’t like about the car. Does anyone else feel the same? What can I do to sort it?  Is the 280 better? Or Audi A6 springs/dampers.  Should I try something aftermarket like Eibach springs or do I need to go whole hog and get shocks too.

It feels like someone fitted the suspension from a little light weight 1.4 petrol Golf to a big heavy diesel...

I’ve a 272 with DCC and it acts exactly the same as your description. I’ll probably end up with a set of Bilsteins and Eibach springs to sort the issue out. The standard set up is an absolute joke, IMO!!

H&R springs on my 190 4x4 combi and it sorted it to some extent but still needs shocks so thinking of some koni special actives

Glad it's not just me, exactly the same comments on all counts !

The ride on my other car an 18 year old A6 with 233k miles and original suspension is heaps better.

I think it’s quite similar to a T reg A6 Avant SE 2.4 we had. It was very soft in roll - crucially though it didn’t smash into the bump stops all the time or rock.

I took my dad out in it and the first thing he said was that it felt like a ship at sea.

I’m not looking for a sports car but I can’t believe they signed this off.

I’m wondering what other VAG cars have same suspension layout but more spring/damper.  Maybe a Passat...or A6? That’s not to say they would be cheaper than after market.

If it rose like my friends Golf GTD estate it would be awesome!

My old A6 is a Sport and rides great.

Yep I've had my Superb bottom out the bump stops over speed humps which is pretty shocking.

Would be useful to know the spring rates and dampers on the same MQB-B platform cars, even just to know how they varied. Not sure this info is going to be out there.

Agree with you the best option is aftermarket.
