Winter tires

Yeti5L14TSI

Recommended Posts

The 215 is the width in mm, and the 55 is a percentage of the sidewall to the width, so the side walls will be 55% of 215mm = 118mm

Whereas your original tyres have a sidewall of 112mm

So almost identical size.

@Dale_Stevens

That would be Simply Clever if someone was to do exactly that and the thread pinned to save the similar posts eveyr year on the same subject of winter or all season tyres or different tyre sizes for a Yeti.

There are 17" Tyres on there and the OP has a 2011 Yeti.   So an original model.

Thanks a lot. I read the mentioned topic but there was no discussion regarding 215 55 17. Thats the reason I have asked you guys wether I can use 215 55 17 instead of 225 50 17 :)

Those will be 1.75% larger in diameter than the OE size, since the recommendation is to stay within 2% I would be quite happy using those on my car (insurer willing) - of course, do it at your own riskB)

I have a skoda yeti 1.4 tsi 2011 with 225 50 17. Shopping for winter tires and found a bargain on 215 55 17? Is it a problem to fit those intsead? Or is it even better?

If you're looking for bargain priced tyres for the Yeti, 205/55R16 size tyres are a much cheaper size than 17" tyres and also cheaper than the 215/60R16 size.

205/55R16 was fitted as standard to some Yeti models and is one of the recommended winter tyre sizes.

Snow chains The snow chains improve handling in wintry road conditions. Remove the full wheel trims before installing the snow chains » page 156. Only fit snow chains with links and locks not larger than 12 mm. The use of snow chains on vehicles with front-wheel drive and on vehicles with four-wheel drive differs. As e-Roottoot says check with your insurer.

Snow chains on tarmac do not damage your tyres but the chains wear down quickly and the ride comfort is more that of a tank in the field. Also your steering is less precise.

The XL are the reinforced sidewalls which might be a good idea where you do your driving.

The V are higher speed rated than the H so maybe a good idea if you drive in Continental Europe on lovely dry roads quickly.

The out of stock is just that, and @Carlston will be able to explain the rest and tell you why you should buy new smaller wheels and fit narrower tyres to get tyres cheaper.

Thanks, but when would a Yeti require reinforced tyres?

I'll be towing a caravan with mine, and will be carrying loads, but only within the limits of the car.

I used them just because they helped with hitting pot holes, or as i thought and think, saves me replacing as many wrecked tyres.

The sidewalls of various All Season & Winter tyres are pretty prone to damage / bulges IME.

That is from me or people driving my cars hitting them and various things like ironworks on roads, or hiiting the 'Ramp' / Steel cover or cut tar at roadworks on an edge.

Maxxis AP2 which is reinforced and still got an egg.

Not always my wrecked tyres were 'Driver error'.

Then I guess it makes sense to go with the stronger version, thanks.

Are the side walls of winter & all season tyres generally softer than normal tyres?

Just browsing the web for Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons and Halfords have the following options, can anyone explain the differences please?

Goodyear Vector 4 seasons have 3 generations, original, Gen-2 and Gen-3, the Gen-3 is most recent, but not yet available in all the sizes (but as newest version, Gen-3 is available in your size, I would choose this)

94 and 98 are load (based on weight etc), can go higher, but never go less than original.

H and V are max speed (from memory 131 and 149 mph), both much higher than a Yeti will reach, so either ok

FP is flange (rim) protection, a bump (ring around the side) that should hit the kerb before your alloys, if you skim kerbs

XL is extra load (these have stiffer sidewalls), consider these if load vehicle heavily

AO is Audi original equipment (irrelevant)

I am guessing the out of stock ones, might be because they have been superseded

I think they are original Gen

normally has G2 or G3 at end of name for newer versions

Halfords have Gen-3 at £142.99 (but you can get £80 shopping voucher so effectively £20 per corner less)

My Tyres have them for £128.69 (not sure if that is fitted)

Thats good to know.

Just had a look at their terms and conditions and for my 17" wheels its a £40 Love 2 Shop voucher which I guess is better than being kicked in the teeth..

I have changed the CrossClimates i had on but not on OEM wheels to Alpin 6's on the original wheels.

It is easy with an EV to check the equivalent of MPG by how the range changes in the same weather conditions / temps on the same routes.

The Alpin 6 are treat for comfort and handling compared to the OEM Primacy 4 tyres the car came with and no detriment to the range.

(I think they are feeling a bit better than the CrossClimates did in the same size.  The Alpins fitted are a higher Speed / Load rated than the CrossClimate i have are.)

They are on now until next summer when i will see if the CrossClimates go back on or not.

I’ve just bought some Hankook I'cept RS2 W452 as 205/55 r16 for £300 fully fitted for four. They seem to have very good reviews and a good balance of performance vs cost. I’m more interested in the wet performance rather than snow. I’ll be giving them a good workout driving to Scotland and back a number of times in the new year. 400 miles each way so I’m expecting it to be wet at some point.
