Front suspension rubbing against inner wheel arch

Featured Replies

Hi

I've had an issue with creaking when I turn Ive checked everything and changed all ball joints and put new shocks and mounts in hoping it was the mount or the strut.

As soon as I put it in it made no difference to the creaking.

So today I jacked the car up and started dismantling one thing at a time off the steering knuckle to narrow it down i ended up with just the driveshaft and strut left on it and then I managed to find the creak and it was the spring rubbing against the inside of the arch when I turn it.

When I got the car it had new springs on so I reused them as I've only done a few thousand miles on them.

I'm just concerned now that if I buy another pair they could be the same or the previous owner had fitted the wrong springs on.

I've put a photo of the springs on does this look like it's the wrong springs and way offset. I seated the springs properly in the groove stop. Looking at other struts online the springs sit closer to the dust boot at the back but then more spaced out towards the front to allow room for movement.

If I get new springs from BBC Superfactors or ECP that say it's for standard suspension would this be the right fit. Thanks for any help

Spring looks to be installed upside-down.

Thanks I was wondering that, when I put the spring on I kept it the same way as it was before, I had the smaller opening at the top but it still looked odd but I thought it might balance itself out once it's got weight on it.

Is it the flat rounded end that goes at the bottom?

Is it considered safe being upside down apart from the rubbing?

Also would it still be safe to turn it the right way up after a few thousand miles

Or would it be better to just replace it.

Sure its flat to the top with the bottom being sat against the stop in the strut platform with the natural rise in the spring being sat on the "ramp" built into the strut platform. The photo shows that the top mount is not sat square to the strut which suggests that spring is not flat there.

If the flat end is to the bottom this will apply point loading from the ramp on the rising spring seat.

Oh bugger, it looked like it was the flattest part was the top but when I put it back on I kept them the same way up as o took them off.

Guess it will be easier to get new springs fitted I was going to get new springs when I did the shocks but I've not had the car that long and they had just been replaced so I thought I would re use them.

I guess it's a lesson learnt.

Thanks for your help I'll get some ordered tomorrow.
