Superb 280, improve none existent exhaust note?

Featured Replies

On the few occasions I've really given it some stick, there really is a deep noisy throaty exhaust note on our 280, which can definitely be heard in the cabin over the engine sound. Personally, I want to keep it quiet until needed and looking BS; it's what a Q car is all about.

I'll try and speak to an exhaust specialist and see what they say. Thankfully I've got one of the proper 280's without the GPF :)

I just realized that I could have installed the central resonator instead of the GPFs: I would have had more space available and I would have struggled less with the transmission shaft :D!

hope this can at least help someone else in the future...

Yeah I’d agree with that, I think my 280 sounds great when it is being floored and also has a nice burble when going up hills with a moderate bit of welly too :) (maybe it’s because I don’t have too many references for a nice exhaust note but I like this one...)

I think I'll probably leave the exhaust for the time being. Having listened to the 0-60 noise of the Superb and Golf R on Youtube, they sound very very similar.

I did come across this video, I think this exhaust sound great, especially the first part of the video where it's got a deep rumble. The 2nd part of the video sounds a bit chavy, but I like the way that exhaust has the option. Well out of my budget though I would imagine.

Compare it to this pull away at the start of this video, where all you can hear is the turbo. No exhaust at all.

My centre section has been changed for a 3inch s/s pipe. The centre res has been replaced by this https://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1527_1032_1054&products_id=292&osCsid=7314c85bb8343fbbdc280f8761ae5ae4 and there's no drone.

It's slightly louder than before - nothing too intrusive though. I like the new sound.

I looked one of those. Only £50-60 including delivery https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vibrant-Performance-1794-Bottle-Resonator/dp/B001804TPI/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=vibrant+performance+resonator&qid=1604956354&sr=8-1

I don't suppose you have some sounds you can upload or email?

Aye thats it, just you rub it in why don't you.

Mine being quiet doesn't bother me to be honest. What really gets on my wick is the turbo lag. Sometimes by the time it kicks in the notions left me. :sleepy:

Sorry, no, I don't have the equipment to do it.

Besides, if it ain't the turbo flutter I hear, it's the tshhh from the foam filter.

And if it's not that, it's someone saying - can you slow down, I feel sick lol

ah shame. I was hoping to hear the sound of it before I committed to having one installed.

When I put my foot down it sounds like the gates of hell have opened !!! ( In reality when I'm parked on the drive I can hear them clicking as they open and shut .... Thats how I know they  are there but HEY !!! It's cool ... Right ? )

Edit to Say ... If you own a 272 DO NOT read the text in brackets please ...

You are not the only one. The only indication I have that the valves are working is the clicking sound just after engine start....

Inside the car, nada, can't tell if it's open or closed. Still, it's got it and that's +20horsepwrs

Here's a video of a superb 280 without a resonator

Sadly it doesn't really tell you anything useful as I don't think the camera is in a good position.

I bought an ODBEleven and disabled the exhaust values (you can't do this on a 172 BTW), there's a bit more of a deep rumble lower down in the rev range, but not much difference at higher revs.

Did you mean 272 or are you talking about a Renault Clio?;)

oops

In the meantime, I've emailed a Powerflow Dealer to see if I can get a cost to fit a new resonator, one that might let a bit more noise through.

I have a stage 2 MY17 280 sportline. current with muffler bypass pipes, sound really nice atm, but still no dsg fart. Valve open it acts like  muffler delete, no drone on highway speed.

i also put sound deadening in the boot well to tam the noise. stock noise level in cabin while crusing, but roaring when underload.

I am thinking building a BCS like sport version resonator section, twin 10'' long and 4" width resonators ,  one with 3" inlet/out, other with 2'inch inlet.

i am also considering the muffler style in the last pic, however i get conflict information about factory valve size. In skoda superb, the valve size is 2.25" instead of 2.5" in golf mk7 r

I really want to improve the exhaust note coming from the car, especially under acceleration. At the minute, you can't hear the exhaust over the engine.

I've read most of the posts I can find on modifying the exhaust, but none seem to suite what I'm trying to achieve.

What I'm trying to achieve is a nice exhaust note under acceleration, no droning inside the cabin, not boy racery loud, and all while keeping the stock look(exhaust tips).

The cheapest option seems to be a resonator delete, and while this meets much of my criteria, it can leave a drone in the cabin around 70 mph which I don't want in a family car.

A custom exhaust is another solution, but it's costly and I'd be worried about the losing the stock exhaust tips. I know some have fitted AMG tips that look similar, but I want the stock tips or exact replicas. I don't want the car to look blatantly modified in any way.

For the Golf R, there seems to be a BCS resonator that is supposed to cancel out the drone, I don't suppose anyone has tried this on a superb?

Has anyone tried any other kind of resonator?

Has anyone tried anything else?

Really keen to get some suggestions.

EDIT: Forgot to add, my wife has a Mini Cooper S, and it sounds fantastic, but at cruising speeds it doesn't intrude into the cabin. I'm always disappointed when I jump from her can back into mine (exhaust note wise).

To be honest I suspect a custom job would be the way forward. I don't know where you are based, but the best VAG specialist I've used round Yorkshire is 'Darkside developments'.  They are predominantly a diesel specialist, but they know VAG stuff inside out and also do a lot with custom builds and fabrication. They're in Barnsley and are about as Yorkshire as it gets.  They've done some awesome builds though and have a decent YouTube account (if anyone hasn't seen it already)They also have a 4wd rolling road............................ just in case you get tempted to liberate a few more horses in the process.

If it were me I probably wouldn't spend the sort of cash purely for sound. I'd want  even more poke as well.

I've watched some of their videos, problem is, they are 100 mile away.

We have three Powerflow dealers in the North East, but the nearest one is 20 mile away, which isn't that far, but it's difficult to find the time to visit them to get some suggestions/costs. From Google, there's no one near me that does exhaust fabrication either. I have VAG specialist within a mile of my home, but they fit off the shelf exhaust solutions.

Does anyone have any idea, on the 280, what exactly makes the car so quiet? is it the resonator or the back boxes?

If you change the back boxes along, will you get DSG farts, or are they being remove by the resonator? I'm assuming changing just the back boxes will improve sound, and I do wonder if the OEM tips and valve controls can be cut and welded to new backboxes instead.

I also wonder why the Golf R etc has a single large back box, but the 280 has two separate ones. Done for increased boot space?

Yeah, it's a fair old run away. They haven't done any work on my Superb, as it's very much a family cruiser (complete with a full 150 bhp). I'm past my boy racer days, but I  may still get them to remap it in the next year or so , I've also used them for previous vehicles. It's about 30 miles from me, so I've only used them for tuning work or bigger stuff. After a few horror stories with remaps, I was always willing to travel and pay a bit more for the work, as they know the tolerances better than anyone (well they do with pd engines and the later common rail stuff anyway).

All I would say, is if it's a vehicle you're planning on keeping a while, then they'll give you a a proper set up and take advantage of the extra exhaust gas flow.

How is the 280 by the way?

I'd love one, must be an awesome sleeper, but I decided to go down practical diesel route.

I know this wasn’t aimed at me but I’d just like to say the 280 is an awesome car and a brilliant sleeper even in standard form. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had someone pull out to overtake me on the motorway at the end of a 50 zone and I’ve just booted it once the national limit signs are past and left them for dust! Scarily quick acceleration and I recently discovered putting it in manual 3rd gear just before the end is even more instant and brutal.

sport mode seems to drop down to 2nd then hit the redline and bog down for a split second while drive only goes to 3rd but still has a minor delay due to the kickdown  but if it’s already in 3rd it just takes off like a scolded cat

I think that a custom exhaust is the only solution, and it will be costly.

I had to modify my stock exhaust but i wanted it to be quiet. Now it's silent at low rpm, inside you can hear it only when pushing hard.

You have to ask to a exhaust specialist what you want, it's the only way you can get the sound what you're searching for.

Here's mine:
