Interesting stats on the decline of filling stations in the UK

Featured Replies

"The number of petrol filling station forecourts in the UK is experiencing a gradual decline.  Experian Catalyst 2019 highlights that the number of petrol forecourts in the UK has fallen to just 8,382, compared to the 1967 high of 39,958.  Of these forecourts, 7,402 have a kiosk/shop."

"Conversely, the number of registered UK vehicles at the end of March 2019 was 38.5 million (DfT Vehicle Licensing Statistics)."

Supermarkets !!!!!!!

I suspect this decline is connected to significantly better fuel economy / longer range of modern vehicles.

and wholesale rate buying power of the big chains. independents probably made up a big chunk of market share in the 60s but they cant compete with Tesco et al. in terms of volume purchase thus higher price on the pump and peopme can and will shop around for fuel.

The brothers that were honoured by the Queen recently will be making sure where there is a demand for fuel or vehicle charging and shopping there will be forecourts.

They might take a while from getting planning permission until the machinery and trades move in but once the work starts they do not hang about.

Tesco have a financial interest in Greenergy that supplies them and other major brand filling stations and independents.

Petrol & diesel prices at the independent garage near where I leave are typically 9p per litre more than the supermarkets in both of the nearest towns, so anyone who shops/works in those towns buys fuel there not locally.

Fuel might be expensive but after the taxes there isn't much profit in it for independent retailers. Usually there is more money made in the shops.

Supermarket station probably run close to / or at a loss.

Just paid £1.069 per litre today for petrol at Sainsbury's supermarket and as the price falls closer to £1 per litre the amount of tax as a percentage increases to 75% or 75 pence from the £1 at the pump.

Interestingly Germany has also seen a similar trend so it's not something thats just specific to the UK.

The number also peaked at around the same time with 46,091 at its peak and now 14,449 in 2020.

its a trend everywhere i think.

i dont have stats for over here, but - anecdote alert -

my current town has ..

10 open fuel stations, only one is "independent" but they also own one possibly 2 of the franchised fuel stations in town.

another 2 franchised ones are also owned by one family,

and i can count at least 3 closed ones that are now used as second hand car sales forecourts, and one motor factors that once upon a time also had pumps..

Where I am, a small town of 26,000 people, there's 14 or 15 supermarkets (Aldi, Lidl, Rewe, Edeka, Real and Kaufland) but none have a petrol station. I did a count and there's 9 Tankstelle. Jet, Aral X 2, Shell X 2 and four indies. One nearby Famila has a petrol station but the other local Famila's don't. Do they have more supermarkets with petrol stations down your way, Phil?

Forfar which is a small market town of about 14,000 people near other small towns with a filling station or 3 & EV charging places, and it has a family owned Shell filling station, another at Asda, then a Gulf filling station with Instavolt EV chargers and a Spar, EV chargers at Tesco, Asda & car Dealerships.

Then for the A90 drivers and locals there is a new EG Group large filling station and with HGV stances and EV chargers, Costa drive through etc nearing completion,

also nearing completion 100 yards away is a council owned EV charging station that will be in addition to the other 3 public charging locations in the town.

Pretty much the same here. The bigger Marktkauf supermarkets usually have a fuel station. Raffeissen have them too (where I usually go as it's the cheapest usually). And SB have them usually too (a wholesalers).

But it's very different to the UK in that regard. In the UK all the major supermarkets have their own station.

I have seen a LIDL in Scotland with a Rapid EV charger which you need to pay for, but that trumps Tesco or Asda with just free Fast chargers which are not fast.

It was cheaper than other chargers you pay at.   Lidl Larkhall.

I hope they plan more stores having this.
