Fabia MK2 radiator fan Air con

Featured Replies

Hi I've I have a Fabia MK2 1.4 BXW

I've noticed when I put the air con on when the engine is cold the fan only comes on when the engine is about 75 degrees.

Is this normal for Skoda's.

Just making sure it's not faulty.

Thanks

Two different criteria bring on the radiator fan(s); coolant temperature or refrigerant pressure.  Refrigerant pressure varies strongly with both ambient temperature and compressor 'effort'.

Obviously at this time of year ambient temperatures are low in the UK, and it also won't take much compressor effort to chill the evaporator down, so refrigerant pressure will take a while to trigger fan activity.

When was your system last recharged? Did it work OK in the summer?

Thanks that makes sense.

it was recharged last year when I had to replace the condenser, the air con works fine, I wasn't sure if my fan was starting to go.

There is one possibility that I hadn't thought of before, and that is that the low speed function on the fan has failed, leaving only the high/full speed. This will only come on at slightly higher coolant temperature or refrigerant pressure.

When the fan is coming on is it quite loud and noticeable?

I'll check wiring/fuse info later to see if there's an easy way to check for this possibility on your car.

Easiest way to rule in/out that 'no low speed function' possibility is to pull the relevant fuse while the fan is running.  If it's on the low speed, it'll stop, if it's running at high speed, it won't.  The fuse in question is No.8 in the fuse panel above the battery.  It's in the section to the right of the strip fuses as you look into the engine bay, probably under a clip-on cover. 30 Amp rated.

Thanks for that it's a big help, I'll give it a run tomorrow and then I'll take number 8 fuse out and see.

Thanks
