Oil change after only 450 miles

Featured Replies

I bought my new Skoda Superb Sportline in September. Due to the Covid restrictions it has only done 450 miles, the onboard system is now saying that it is due for an oil change in 2 weeks time. I cannot believe this is correct and I have contact the dealers querying it. To date they haven't replied. Has any other owner experienced this?

Service intervals are based on time as well as mileage, was it pre-registered?

2020 models were being built at the factory from around August 2019 until July 2020, since then they've been building 2021 models.

Thanks for that. I bought the car from a main dealer and it was registered on Sept 1st, 20 miles done when I collected it. Only 450 miles on it now so I can't see it needing an oil change, I'll have to speak to the dealer and hear what they say.

Your point about when the car could have been produced coild explain why the message is being displayed now, maybe it needs to be reset.

However (and possibly as unfashionable as this next comment is) - please check the oil level in your car.  My TDI uses a little sip of oil - and I noticed that the count-down started happening quicker than normal.  A quick check revealed that the oil level was at half on the dipstick.  Topped up....countdown slowed down.

Not only is the service interval based, but the oil change is condition based too.

That was the first thing I did when the warning appeared. I'll post the answer I get from the dealer later. Thanks.

Simply the Technician or Fitter & the Dealership doing the PDI and changing the car from Transit mode have not done the job correct;y.

That is leaving the car on a Variable Service Interval, or changing to a Fixed Service if you want.

If you can not be bothered visiting them, have them send out a technician with the equipment and half a brain, or if you go in to then ask for your expenses for them wasting your time by being useless.

Thank you, I've been in touch with Skoda UK and they are contacting my local dealer. Awaiting a call from the dealer for further info.

Since you have a MY2020, an oil change after only 450 miles isn't necessarily a bad thing...

Few reasons :

- The engine break-in is almost done: going with new oil free from thin metal particles from running in is a good thing. Don't forget that lockdown has probably lead you to let the car parked for several days. This may have make the engine "drier" that it would have. I mean the engine oil had long enough time to fully drain back to the tank. The oil film on mechanical parts has been even more thinner and this has decreased the lubrication and therefore parts protection... The engine break-in may have been amplified upon these "dry start"...

My Mk3 is the 2nd car I've bought brand new. I had oil and oil filter replaced on both of them after 1500 km (~930 miles).

It may sound an outdated practice, but anyway safer for mechanical parts... Note: This has been suggested by my Skoda dealer. I only had to pay for spare parts. He offered me the working hours.

Thank you all for your help. I've been in touch with Lookers Stockport and got the following info. I bought the car new on 26th Sept with 20 miles on the clock. Lookers told me that it was first registered at the end of 2019 so the oil change is due regardless of the mileage (450) on the clock now. I've booked in for the service later this week.

@mixhouse Does that mean that your car only has a Manufacturers Warranty until the end of 2022?    3 years from first registered.

?

Are they doing the Interim / Minor service for free?

Sorry but that is still rubbish as the car left the factory with Long Life oil in late 2019 and it does not need an oil change until 18,500 miles (30,000km) or 2 years whichever arrives first. So it shouldn't need a service for another 12 months but the dealer has set the first service at 12 months from first registration to make you pay sooner unless they gave you 2 services for £79 like my dealer did on my Feb 2020 used Superb or maybe they gave you 2 free services.

That sounds odd. My car was registered in Aug 19, I bought it in Feb 20 with 2500 miles, serviced in this Dec at 8500 miles, it must have been on a long life schedule and the service indicator kept extending the more I drove it. Just prior to service I did a 500 mile trip and the service interval extended by another 3 weeks. I noted that the dealer switched it to VW504 and 12 month servicing as I had bought a plan which simply said, 2 services, with no time limit specified.

Simple enough that a car was changed to Fixed Servicing @ the PDI and then maybe put in the Showroom for display, or maybe to be a Demonstrator and get the dealership more profit as an Ex Demonstrator / Ex Management car after 3 months / 3,000 miles but instead eventually was sold.

In that case the Manufacturers Warranty should start from the VED started in the UK and not when first registered.

If you think you are buying a new car though and not Pre Reg there should be 3 years warranty.   Or if not the Dealership could give a Warranty that gives 3 years cover.

PS

@Redboy

When the oil was changed and VW504 00 used instead of the VW508 00 that the car left the factory with, 0w 20 FS IV ,

it was still long life oil that was used,

only they went for the less expensive for them, or maybe what they have 5w 30 FS III.     (VW502 00 could have been used for Fixed Services. 5w 40 FS)

@e-Roottoot is vw504 ok for 200KW variable servicing, or should it be 508? Otherwise it will be fixed at 12 months.

VW 504 00 / 5w 30 FS III is perfect for Fixed or Variable servicing if you want Long Life oil used with a TSI.

The factory went VW508 00 to get WLTP / RDE results.    That is also Long Life oil.   Just 0w 20 FS IV

Update.

I took the car in for the oil change today Lookers, Stockport), the lady on reception took the key and asked how many miles are on it. I told her 480 and she said "is that all"? When I confirmed it she said "it shouldn't need an oil change yet, let me check". When she came back she told me that the system should have been reset before I collected the car and no service or oil change is required, gave me the key and wished me a merry xmas.

I learnt something today!!

Thanks again for all comments.

@mixhouse

Did the tech reset the Service Indicator then and there, and what is the car now showing as when the Service / Oil change is due ?

The thing is that for the cars Service History the Dealership should have carried out the Oil & Filter change at their expense because of their lax attitude or incompetence.

Yes reset was done but the dealers I bought the car from is based in Norwich and I live in Manchester so the fault was with the Norwich dealer. I'm happy now and can't be bothered with chasing them, I can't travel outside my area anyway. Having Lookers sorting it for me is the only thing I can celebrate this Xmas!
